Revitalization of Cultural Heritage
Perspectives, The NLM, Saturday, 1 August 1998

Preparations are in full swing to hold the Sixth Myanmar Traditional
Performing Arts
Competitions in accord with lofty aims - to rekindle in all the
nationals including youths,
patriotism and nationalist fervour: to vitalize Myanmar culture and fine
arts; to bring to the
fore once again Myanmar music, Myanmar dancing and to hold Myanmar
national pride and
prestige high; to see to reflourishing of genuine Myanmar traditional
performing arts; and to
contribute to the spiritual development of youths and prevent
infiltration of alien culture.

In order to materialize these aims, the Myanmar Traditional Performing
Arts Competitions
have been held every year.

Myanmar people possess their own culture and traditions and can still
preserve their own
national cultural heritage up to this day. Their conviction to
safeguard the race and the spirit
to cherish national culture are perpetually alive and dynamic.

Historical records and archaelogical findings at the present age prove
how proud we should be
to be Myanmar. Performing arts reflect a nation?s civilization, Myanmar
has its own
flourishing literature, traditions, national character, national
identity and norms. Those who
can perpetuate this thriving national identity are patriotic.

Moreover, holding of performing arts competitions, restoration of
ancient pagodas and other
heritage, and rebuilding of ancient palaces of renown Myanmar Kings are
also concerted
efforts toward revitalization of cultural heritage and patriotism of the
people and the
implementation of the four social objectives - uplift of the morale and
morality of the entire
nation; uplift of national prestige and integrity and preservation and
safeguarding of cultural
heritage and national character; uplift of dynamism of patriotic spirit,
and uplift of health,
fitness and education standards of the entire nation.

Only when Myanmar national identity is preserved will Myanmar be able to
stand tall and the
Union endure perpetually.

It is therefore necessary for every Myanmar national to preserve and
safeguard national
culture and heritage in the long-term national interest.
