Australian Trade Unions picket SLOR

Australian Trade Unions Picket SLORC embassy in
	  		    Canberra - Australia
			        10 August 1998

In response to the request sent out on the 21st of July 1998, in accordance
with the resolution passed at the International Trade Unions Conference on
Burma in Manila October 1995 and in solidarity with the workers and farmers
of Burma, the members of the Labor Council of the Australian Capital
Territory are holding a picket line in front of the SLORC embassy in Canberra.

This is to protest the oppression by the SLORC against elected people's
representatives of the 1990 election, against the ethnic nationalities, the
violations of trade union rights, denying freedom of association for
students and political organizations and denying the convening of a
parliament.

Similiar actions will be held by the International Transport Workers
Federation and the Trade Union members in the Phillipines.

These actions will be held time and again to remind the SLORC of the
solidarity and support by the international trade union movement for the
convening of a parliament by the elected people's representatives of the
1990 election to pave the way for a democratic system in Burma.

Update:
As of 10:00 this morning, a Honeywell Computer company and the mail
delivery truck had been turned away by the picket.

Request by the FTUB.
This picket is a small part in the overall democracy movement. But, we see
it is a practical one that will show the international solidarity support
to the people of Burma who have never had the chance to put pressure on the
military or it's croonies.

1. We would like to request friends of Burma to write letters of support to
the Australian unions and the Burmese community in Australia to show
support for their actions.

2. The International Transport Workers Federation ITF has agreed to also
support the FTUB's call to take actions against SLORC ships going around in
international waters. If any is seen around in ports or harbours please let
us know and we will inform the ITF so that appropiate action can be taken.

Ends.
