BWI light candles for the slain peo

Burma Watch International, a society for human rights, held a ceremony
yesterday, 8898, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 8888 and
honoured " the fallen martyrs " of freedom in Burma at Edmonton City
Hall.

The ceremony was well attended by the BWI members , fellow human rights
activists, who came all the way from Calgary for this special event, and
passers-by.

It was opened with a speech by the President of BWI, Naeem Rauf, whose
father was once the Indian Ambassador to Burma. He explained to the
audience about the 8888 massacre of thousands of peaceful protesters in
Rangoon and across Burma.
Rauf said the regime continues to expand its army and buy arms from
willing suppliers around the world.

Alice Khin recalled the day the streets of Rangoon turned red with
blood. She could not forget that day 10 years ago, while she was on duty
as the dead and dying were being brought to Rangoon General Hospital.

As a tribute to the martyrs , candles were lit and prayers were offered
with the following hymn, after a minute of silence.

For the Healing of the Nations
=====================

For the healing of the nations, Lord we pray
with one accord; for a just and equal sharing
of the things that earth affords. To a life of
love in action help us rise and pledge our word.

Lead us, Father, into freedom, from despair
your world release; that redeemed from war
and hatred, we may come and go in peace.
Show us how through care and goodness
fear will die and hope increase.

ITV taped part of the program and journalists were also present.
The news was in the headline of today's " Edmonton Journal "
