Statement of CNF on the 10th Annive

THE STATEMENT OF THE CHIN NATIONAL FRONT
            ON THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 8, 8, 88
           =========================================

1.	1998 August 8 is the 10th anniversary of the 1988
uprising in which the country as a whole came together in unity
demanding the abolition of military dictatorship and the establishment
of democratic government.

2.	The State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) which forcibly
took over the state power promised on September 18, 1988 to held a
multi-party elections. The military junta however refuses even today to
honor the result of the May 27, 1990 multi-party elections. Leaders and
members of the National League for Democracy which by landslide majority
won the election and the elected members of parliament have been
threatened, imprisoned, tortured and killed by the military junta. Today
in Burma the condition of human rights abuses has reached the worst
level of all time.

3.	With inflation sky rocket high and prices have soared, today Burma is
faced with grave economic crisis. Bribery has become the norm of the
society, moral and character decline has added up to worsen the hardship
of living. The creation of two social classes, the rich military
personnel and the poor others, has then surfaced as a result.

4.	Since 1993 the military junta with its own hand-picked members has
been holding a sham National Convention. The goal of this convention is
to ensure the military's dictation in the governing of the country as to
create a legalised permanent power position in the future leadership of
the country. This is only to prolong the military dictatorship and to
disperse unity among the ethnic groups. The boycotting of such illegal
convention must therefore be carried out as a national obligation.

5.	To solve the two political problems of Burma. Ethnic issue and
democracy issue, the CNF firmly believes that there needs to be a
tripartite dialogue among the military, the ethnic groups and the
democratic forces led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

6.	At the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the 8.8.88 democratic
uprising, the CNF would like to urge the whole Burma to continue the
fight for the abolition of military dictatorship and the restoration of
democracy and human rights in the country.
