The 10th Anniversary of the
"Historical 8-8-88 Mass Democracy Protest"

On March 2nd,1962,General Ne Win-the military dictator, saying that the
unity of the country was at stake, staged a military coup. He suspended the
constitution and stamping on the democratic aspirations of the people of
Burma, stayed in power for 26 years.

In March 1988, small groups of Burmese students took to Rangoon
streets demanding political change. As these demonstrations, gathered
momentum, Ne Win's military commanders sent out thousands of crack troops
that massacred students and working people by the hundreds. In one
incident alone, 41 wounded
students were suffocated to death in a police van. The carnage of 8-8-88
was very tragic and beyond belief, even surpassing the massacre a year
later in China's Tienamen Square. In the aftermath, hundreds more were
taken into custody.

Today, we are gathered here to remember with love and appreciation,
the courageous and fearless children, students, workinging people who
willingly imparted their lives in the hope of attaining DEMOCRACY for Burma
- our beloved country.

We must remember that the fight is not over yet. We are still on
our way to the struggle for DEMOCRACY. Together with Aung San Su Kyi, let
us remember to do all we can, no matter where we are, or how we stand; no
matter how long it takes, we can and we will unitedly continue our fight
for DEMOCRACY.
