Press Release - Lahu Democratic Fro

Press Release
1st August, 1998

LDF
Lahu Democratic Front

We, of the Lahu Democratic Front strongly denounce Burma's State Peace and
Development Council for its restriction and detention of Aung San Suu Kyi.

It is absurd that the SPDC accuses Daw Suu Kyi of causing a confrontation.
They are the ones who confronted her and stopped her. She was peacefully
on her way to attend a meeting. There would be no confrontation if the
SPDC merely let her pass.

It is even more absurd to say that they have stopped her for her own
protection. She did not ask for protection. She needs no protection. The
only threat to her safety has been, and continues to be from the ruling
military junta itself if they were really concerned about.

Once again the SPDC shows its duplicity. It tells the world, with great
fanfare, that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been freed from house arrest, while
it confines her, restricts her movements, jails her party members, and now
literally blocks her way.

The SPDC, on occasion, points to a constitutional convention as evidence of
progress toward democracy, while, at the same time it subverts the process,
sporadically suspends the meetings, and assures its own dominance.

The SPDC now accuses foreign powers of collusion to cause disturbance.
What nonsense Foreign powers are saying to the SPDC, do not allow the
situation to intensify. Let her go, or the SPDC will cause disturbances
that will destabilize the situation. The SPDC will not allow foreign
ambassadors to talk with Daw Suu Kyi. Why? If the situation is truly as
they describe it, there should be no objection. They say that Daw Suu will
not negotiate, In reality, she has been asking for negotiation and dialogue
for years.

The SPDC is showing its "True colors" before the whole world. The ethnic
peoples have long known that no one can believe, nor rely on, any promise
they make.

We support Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in her efforts to free us all. We condemn
the military junta for its latest tyranny.
