Albright Denounces Treatment of Aung San Suu Kyi

Sydney, July 30 (Bloomberg) -- The United States said Myanmar risks greater
international isolation because of its treatment of opposition politician Aung
San Suu Kyi.

U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright departed from the text of a speech
in Sydney to reveal she had been told Aung San Suu Kyi had been taken in a
military vehicle to the capital Yangon against her will after a six-day
standoff at a roadblock set up to prevent her visiting supporters.

``We think that this is an unacceptable violation of human rights . . which
can only lead to the further isolation of Burma,'' Albright told a meeting of
the Australasia center of the Asia Society in Sydney.

``Regrettably the Burmese regime is pursuing a policy not of dialogue, but of
denial,'' she said.

Albright is in Sydney for the annual Australia-United States ministerial
consultations and will meet Prime Minister John Howard tomorrow.
