MEDIA RELEASE
USE OF FORCE ON SUU KYI CONDEMNED

Bangkok:- Asean supporters of Burma?s democracy movement today condemned
the force used to return Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to Rangoon.

"Ms Suu Kyi was not alone on that bridge - she had with her the aspirations
of the 48 million people of Burma who still desire human rights and
democracy. The military?s actions are a further insult to Burma?s citizens
and the governments which expressed concern for her," said Debbie Stothard,
Coordinator of the Alternative Asean Network on Burma (Altsean-Burma).

"The military regime could have easily settled the situation by allowing
her to proceed. It is totally unacceptable that elected MPs and political
leaders are not allowed freedom of movement to engage in peaceful
activities. In fact harassment and torture of elected MPs seem to be a
daily occurrence in Burma.

"We pray the military will come to its senses and salvage the critical
situation in Burma by having dialogue with the NLD and convening Parliament
by August 21.

"It is essential that Asean and the international community steps up
activities to ensure that a peaceful political resolution is achieved soon.
Otherwise the regime will plunge the country deeper into Burma?s current
economic and political morass," stressed Ms Stothard.

Altsean-Burma is a network of organisations and individuals in Asean
countries supporting human rights and democracy in Burma and ultimately,
human right and democracy across the region. Its Secretariat is located in
Bangkok.
