UN to send envoy to Burma

The United Nations secretary-general, Kofi Annan, says he plans to send an
envoy to Burma as the pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi continues a
solitary protest against the military government.

She has spent a sixth day in her car at a checkpoint outside Rangoon,
complaining that she's been prevented from visiting her supporters.

Mr Annan urged the Burmese authorities to allow her freedom of movement.

He said the UN had requested a visit by his envoy at a suitable date in the
near future.

The Burmese government says negotiations are underway to resolve the
situation.

It has rejected a request by foreign diplomats who have voiced concern
about Aung San Suu Kyi's health, to talk to her.
