Myanmar students march for Suu Kyi in New Delhi

NEW DELHI, July 29 (Reuters) - Dozens of students from Myanmar marched in the
streets of the Indian capital on Wednesday, demanding the convening of their
country's parliament and freedom of travel for opposition leader Aung San Suu
Kyi.

``We demand the ruling military government to implement NLD's (National League
for Democracy) demand for convening parliament before 21st August 1998,'' the
All Burma Students League (ABSL), which organised the rally, said in a
statement.

``We strongly condemn the military government for its recent illegal
restrictions of the movement of Aung San Suu Kyi,'' the statement continued.

The students carried placards bearing pro-democracy and anti-military slogans.

Suu Kyi on Wednesday entered the sixth day in her car near Yangon in a silent
protest against government curbs on her travel. The sit-in began last week
after authorities prevented her from meeting NLD colleagues.

Tension between the ruling State Peace and Development Council and the NLD has
risen since Suu Kyi urged the government to convene a parliament comprising
members elected in May 1990. The NLD swept the poll, but the military has
ignored it.

Myanmar on Wednesday refused requests by several countries that U.S. and
Japanese envoys be allowed access to Suu Kyi.

U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright earlier this week expressed grave
concern over the Nobel Peace Prize winner's health and safety and said the
U.S. government held Myanmar's military government directly responsible for
her welfare.
