JAPAN URGES DIALOGUE

Tokyo, July 17 Kyodo -- Japan on Friday expressed concern over intensified
friction between the Myanmar military junta and the pro-democracy National
League for Democracy (NLD). Foreign ministry spokesman Sadaaki Numata
issued a statement saying Japan regards dialogue between the Myanmar
government and the NLD, led by Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, as
important and urges both sides to exercise tolerance and restraint. The NLD
won a landslide victory in the 1990 general election, but the junta refused
to honor the results.
