STATEMENT REGARDING A PEACEFUL PROTEST AGAINST BURMA?S MILITARY
REGIME ON THE 51st ANNIVERSARY OF MARTYR?S DAY

19 July ,1998

We, the undersigned organizations wish to make the following statement
regarding a peaceful protest in Tokyo, on July 19 to mark the 51st
anniversary of MARTYR?S DAY.Burma?s national hero, Bogyoke Aung
San(General Aung San), father of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Burmese
pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Laureate, and other national
independence heroes were assassinated on that day of 1947, just before
Burma gained the independence to which they had dedicated their lives.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said,?When I honour my father,I honour all those
who stand for political integrity in Burma?.Likewise our purpose
through this rally is to show our deepest respect for those reverend
monks and people who have lost their lives for the struggle for national
independence and, even more in order to share the merit of their deeds
among all of us.

We fully support to the call by National League for Democracy (NLD) to
State Peace and Development Council (SPDC),for the convening of
Parliament before the 21st of August. As a winning party in the May 1990
general elections, NLD?s call for the convening of Parliament is
tantamount to asking for the recognition of the will of the people as
expressed through the elections of 1990.

We humbly request the international community to give full support to
NLD?s call for the convening of Parliament as a positive step towards
the democratization of Burma.

Today?s rally is meaningful and part of the movement for democracy and
human rights in Burma. We make three demands:

(1)that ruling military regime SPDC enter into a political dialogue with
NLD led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to solve the prevailing problems in
Burma.

(2)that the Parliament must be convened within sixty days before the
21st of August as a first step to implement the results of the May 1990
general elections.

(3)that all political prisoners must be released immediately and
unconditionally.
