Burma places restrictions on pro-democracy politicians

The military authorities in Burma say they have placed restrictions on
members of the National League for Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi in
what they describe as an effort to avoid confrontation.

A statement by a senior government official said the requirement for
individuals to report to local authorities had been imposed to avoid what
he called a head-on collision between the League and the government.

The measures are reported to apply to NLD members elected in l990 to a
parliament that has yet to be convened.

The statement did not confirm or deny allegations made by exiled students
on Thursday, that more than forty NLD supportesrs had been arrested.
