ENGLISH LANGUAGE VERSION OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE FOR DEMOCRACY (NLD)
RESOLUTIONS
FROM THE PARTY CONGRESS HELD IN RANGOON, MAY 27,1998.

It is resolved that:-

1. This Congress entrusts the CEC with the responsibility of deciding the
final date by which Parliament is to be convened and informing the
authorities of the decision within a short period of time.
 
2. The NLD will not accept any constitution that is not written and
adopted in accordance with democratic principles and with the will of the
people.
 
3. The NLD will not accept any new elections that ignore the results of
the elections of 1990.
 
4. The NLD will always keep the door open for a genuine political
dialogue, aimed at resolving the problems of the nation, to take place.
 
5. The mandate is given to the Chairman and the General Secretary to
enable them to carry out the work of the NLD remains in effect.
 
6. It is the responsibility of the authorities to grant all legitimate
rights of freedom of organization, freedom of publication, and freedom of
assembly to legally registered political parties.
 
7. The authorities be asked to respect the resolutions adopted by UN
General Assembly and UN Human Rights Commission.
 
8. The League strongly objects to the withdrawal by the authorities of the
rights to work the land by peasants who could not sell the prescribed
quota of paddy or who could not provide "voluntary" (forced) labour.
 
9. Such consequences as might result from the general discontent and
sufferings of the peasants are entirely the responsibility of the
authorities.
 
10. The authorities be urged to take the responsibility of fulfilling the
security and welfare needs of workers and civil servants and of getting
rid of bribery and corruption.
 
11. We demand all universities and colleges be reopened and full academic
terms resumed.
 
12. The NLD supports the ardent desire of the students to form a Students'
Union.
 
13. We demand the release of all political prisoners.
