Subject: Prison prepares for Suu Kyi's arrival: dissident group+

BANGKOK, July 2 Kyodo - A Myanmar dissident student group based in Bangkok
said Thursday that Myanmar's military government has renovated a prison for
political detainees to prepare for the confinement of pro-democracy leader
Aung San Suu Kyi.

The All Burma Students Democratic Front (ABSDF) said in a statement that a
part of the women's quarters of the Insein Prison in Yangon was renovated
last week to prepare for Suu Kyi's imprisonment.

Quoting prison sources, the ABSDF said the renovation began last week after
Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) sent a letter to the ruling
State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) on June 24 demanding that a
parliament of representatives elected in the 1990 elections be convened
within 60 days.

Suu Kyi spent six years under house arrest from 1989 for allegedly
violating a 1975 antisubversive law. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
in 1991 for her nonviolent opposition to military rule.
''This is considered to be a preparation for the Burmese (Myanmar) military
authorities to entirely restrict the movements of Daw (Mrs.) Aung San Suu
Kyi following the NLD's demand,'' the ABSDF said. Suu Kyi is the NLD
secretary general.

The ABSDF also pointed out that the renovation of the prison also coincides
with attacks on Suu Kyi by the state-owned media and a clampdown on the NLD
members of parliament.

More than 40 NLD members of parliament were detained in connection with the
party's demand to convene the parliament, according to the ABSDF.
The NLD won a landslide victory in the 1990 general elections, but the
junta has refused to honor the results. ==Kyodo KWS-17:03-02-07-98
