YANGON (June 21) XINHUA - Myanmar
            leader Lieutenant-General Khin Nyunt has
urged the country's police force to
            successfully implement three main tasks
            -- community peace and tranquillity,
prevalence of law and order and narcotic
            drugs control.

At a meeting of the Committee for Reform
            of Myanmar Police Force (MPF)
            Management System here Saturday, Khin
Nyunt, first secretary of the State Peace
            and Development Council (SPDC), said
reform of the management system of the
Myanmar Police Force in form and
essence must be accelerated, the official
newspaper The New Light of Myanmar
            reported Sunday.

He asked all police personnel to be
prepared for the prevention of crimes in
the new developed society and reorganize
and train the police units to be able to
            suppress subversives and hooligans.

He told them to be determined to
safeguard the public, try to be reliable and
unbiased, avoid red tape and uphold their
            code of conduct.

            He quoted Senior-General Than Shwe,
chairman of the SPDC, as saying the MPF
is a trained armed organization in addition
to the country's regular armed forces to be
able to safeguard the nation in emergency
            cases.

The committee for the reform was formed
in January 1994 and rules, procedures
and laws were adopted for scrutinizing the
            existing management, surveillance and
            prosecution and training systems,
            deterring abuse of power, removing
corrupt practices and carrying out reforms
            keeping abreast of the times.
