              Rice exports

Thailand's rice exports for the five months to May jumped 103%
in baht terms and 17% in US dollar terms from the
corresponding period last year to 38,940 million baht, or
US$891 million, according to Commerce Minister Supachai
              Panitchpakdi.

Rice exports in the first five months last year totalled 1.87 million
tons worth 19,193 million baht, or US$760 million.

In May alone, rice exports reached 420,000 tons worth 5,500
million baht, or US$141 million, up from 390,000 tons worth
4.217 million baht, or US$167 million for the same period last
year, up 8% in volume and 30% in baht terms and 18% in US
              dollar terms.

Dr Supachai noted that Thai rice shipments in May declined from
the previous months because of the slow- down from Asean
countries, notably Indonesia and the Philippines.

In addition, the low-grade rice market also faced stiff
competition from China due to increased output and a relatively
              cheaper price.

Although rice shipments to Asean fell, demand from other
              regions remained high.

Many countries in the Middle East and Africa started importing
more rice. Japan also opened bids for rice imports.
