Canada calls for democracy in Myanmar
posted at 10:22 hrs (Bankok time)
OTTAWA, May 27 -- Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy called on the military junta of Myanmar
to restore democracy Wednesday, the eighth anniversary of the last elections in the former Burma.
In a statement, Axworthy noted ''Canada's profound disappointment with the Burmese military
regime's continuing refusal to restore democracy.''
''The military dictatorship refused to honour the (1990) election results'' that gave a landslide
victory to the National League for Democracy (NLD), Axworthy said.
''The Canadian government continues to urge the Burmese military regime to initiate a meaningful
dialogue with Burma's pro-democracy leaders, including (NLD leader) Aung San Suu Kyi, as an
important step toward the restoration of democracy.'' (AFP)
