Myanmar Rulers Warn Democracy Party

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Myanmar's military rulers have warned the pro-
democracy party of Aung San Suu Kyi not to celebrate the anniversary of its
landslide victory in the 1990 general elections, Myanmar government sources
said.

The military had learned the National League for Democracy was planning a
ceremony Wednesday marking the party's 1990 election win, government sources,
speaking on condition of anonymity, said Sunday.

But the group was told to cancel the event because it would ``cause a setback
in the ongoing nation-rebuilding process,'' the sources said.

After the election, the military arrested many of the victorious candidates
and blocked the new parliament from convening.

The military in Myanmar, also known as Burma, came to power after brutally
crushing a 1988 pro-democracy uprising. It has been widely accused of human
rights abuses.
