           Assistant UN Secretary-General and party conclude tour

YANGON, 15 May-Director-General of Vienna-based United Nations Office Executive
Director of the United Nations International Drug Control Programme Assistant UN
Secretary-General Mr Pino Arlacchi and party left here by air today after studying the combating of
drug abuse in Myanmar.

They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Secretary of Central Committee for Drug
Abuse Control Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Police
Brig-Gen Hla Tun, Head of Office of Strategic Studies Col Kyaw Thein, Resident Representative of
UNDCP Mr Richard Dickins and heads of departments.

       Minister for F&R receives Lower House delegation of Germany

YANGON, 15 May-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received member
of the Lower House Mr Willy Wimmer and party of Gennany, accompanied by Ambassador of
Germany Mr Wolfgang Wiesner, at his office at 3 pm today.

They discussed mutual cooperation.

Present also was Governor U Kyaw Kyaw Maung of Central Bank of Myanmar.

   UNDCP Executive Director says cooperation of UN members needed for
                    success of drug control in Myanmar




YANGON, 15 May-Mr Pino Arlacchi, Executive Director of the United Nations International
Drug Control programme met the Press today at Yangon International Airport before leaving
Myanmar after his five-day visit to obtain first hand information concerning the drug control
programme in Myanmar.

Responding to the questions raised by the journalists, Mr Arlacchi said that he toured northern
Myanmar and met Kokang and Wa national leaders there and that the discussions were significantly
constructive. 
He said that they began to implement projects in those regions and the five-year plan to be
implemented in Myanmar had to be extended to 15 years and for that, they had two donor
countries which are the United States and Japan, and that the Wa leader whom he met told them
that the drug control project is being started and he promised that the United Nations will see to the
success of the project.

Continuing, he said that the Wa national leader said the project would achieve success to their
satisfaction, that the future will see elimination of opium cultivation and production, that all over
Myanmar, people eagerly desire eliminating opium and realization of the aim depends on voluntary
cooperation of the UN members, that he would inform the UN and international community of the
requirements in the drug control programme in Myanmar, and that he met national group leaders
who are really eager to eliminate drugs.

Present were Secretary of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Director-General of
Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Deputy Director-General of MPF Police
Brig-Gen Hla Tun, Head of Department of the Office of Strategic Studies Col Kyaw Thein,
Director Police Col Kham Aung of CCDAC Office, Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U
Hla Tun and officials.
President of Myanmar Foreign Correspondents Club U Sein Win, Chairman U Sao Kai Hpa and
other foreign correspondents.
