The Asian Age: Briton held in Burma, suspected of terrorism
9/5/98

Rangoon, May 8: The Burmese authorities have arrested a British national
suspected of terrorist activities and collaborating with student
opposition activists, the government-run press said on Friday. A report in
the New Light of Myanmar newspaper said officials had detained James
Rupert Rusell Mawdsley near the Thai border on April 30 on charges of
illegal entry.

"Investigations conducted by the ministry of immigration and population
revealed that he was a mercenary terrorist," the report said. The report
said he was "collaborating" with the Thai-based All Burma Students
Democratic Front and ethnic Karen National Union rebels "with the intent
to cause disturbances to disrupt stability of the state."

Authorities said he had been arrested and expelled from Burma last year
for organization anti-government demonstrations in Rangoon and handing out
"terrorist" pamphlets, but had returned on foot across the Thai border.
