Fabricated Attack
The so-called student leader Aung Tun is (35) years of age and is a graduate
of Yangon Institute of Technology. Certain anti-government quarters are again
coming up with fabrications and exaggerations to mislead the people who are
not familiar with the actual situation or criminal activities of Aung Tun.
Aung Tun is being portrayed by the outlawed (so-called) student organization
ABSDF as having been served imprisonment for writing a history of the Myanmar
student movement. In fact, legal action was not taken against him for such
writings, but for breaching the 1962 Printers and Publishers Registration act
for which he was sentenced to serve 3 years imprisonment. Moreover, Aung Tun's
collaborations with the insurgent groups, terrorist plots and subversive
activities are being explained in detail at a press briefing held in Yangon on
1st of March 1998. He was also being sentenced to 7 years imprisonment under
the Unlawful Association Act (1908) and another 7 years for Emergency
Provision Act of 1950 altogether making it 17 years. It is quite interesting
to learn the way ABSDF deliberately and intentionally failed to
mention the other criminal acts Aung Tun had committed but made to look as if
he had been severely punished for just writing a historical account of the
student movements.

Disinformation Campaign
There has been disinformation spread by certain quarters stating that Daw
San San (an ex-NLD representative) was sentenced to (25) years imprisonment
for doing media interview. In Myanmar today there are a lot of people doing
media interviews in which they have expressed their views quite openly. If
people were to be arrested for doing media interviews the government will have
to definitely expand its prisons which is not the case today.
Daw San San was sentenced to (25) years imprisonment under section (122) of
the Penal Code concerning Punishment of High Treason on April of 1991. She was
involved in the act of setting up a parallel government in Myanmar. But she
enjoyed the benefit of general amnesty in 1992 after she vowed to task the
undertaking that she will abide by the law and behave accordingly.
Disappointingly, due to her fabrications and distribution of false
information domestically and internationally to create instability and unrest
in the country as well as her participation in groups adversely subversive the
amnesty granted has been revoked in October 1997 under the appropriate
criminal law and sentenced to serve the original sentence.
