Burmese activist jailed for BBC interview

A leading member of the democracy movement in Burma, San San, has been
sent to prison for twenty-five years by the military authorities after
being accused of distributing false information domestically and
internationally.

The main exiled Burmese students group ABSDF said the jailing was a
result of an interview San San gave to the BBC last year.

But a Burmese military spokesman denied it jailed people just for giving
media interviews.

San San was elected to parliament in the landslide victory by the
National League for Democracy in 1990 -- a parliament never allowed by
the Burmese military to take office.
