April 8,1998.Rangoon  slams door on US ambassador

Burma's military government will not permit the American ambassador to the United Nations to visit Rangoon as long as its leaders are barred from entering the United States, a government spokesman said yesterday.

Ambassador Bill Richardson had hope to visit Burma on a South Asian tour beginning on Saturday that will take him to bahrain, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri lanka.
 
In late 1996, US President Bill Clinton issued an executive order barring members of the military junta and their families from visiting the United States, in a largely symbolic protest over Rangoon's mass arrests of members of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's political party, National League for Democracy.
