BURMESE REFUGEES JAILED IN BANGLADE

BURMESE REFUGEES JAILED IN BANGLADESH
Saturday 7 March, 1998 (8:45pm AEDT)

A group of 64 Burmese refugees have been jailed in southeastern Bangladesh
-- a day after their arrest for clashing with police and setting fire to
part of their camp

Police have charged the refugees on several counts including violence and
intimidation

Yesterday police raided the troubled Kutupalong camp, which shelters some
21-thousand refugees, and arrested the militants, who seized control of the
camp several days ago

The violence, which left 30-people injured was believed to have been
spearheaded by a group opposing repatriation to neighbouring Burma

A spokesman for the U-N High Commission for Refugees says the group was
also preventing food from being delivered.
