              Burma woos

Rangoon has asked Japanese car and motorcycle companies
including Toyota to assemble vehicles in Burma.

The military government made its request through an automobile
industry working group which includes industry members from
              Asean and Japan.

Ninnart Chaithirapinyo, president of the Thai Automotive
Industry Association, who attended the meeting, said Burma has
more potential than Laos or Cambodia for vehicle industry
              development.

Burma has 47 million people and 368,000 vehicles, compared
with 11 million people and 68,407 vehicles in Cambodia, and
4.7 million and 37,566 in Laos.

Toyota tops the Burmese government's list for assembly plant
investment because used Toyotas, imported from Japan, have
              70-80% of the local market.

Japan's International Cooperation Agency will study the
possibility of car assembly in Burma.

Mr Ninnart added that Thailand could help Burma, Laos and
Cambodia to develop car repair industries.
