The Road of Peace 
(Nawnghkio, Kangyi-Yaksauk), Myanmar.


It has been a long time that the northern and southern parts of Shan
State seemed to be apart and a peaceful road is far from imagination. 

Now, a motor road for goodwill and love has paved between them. As
regards the Nawnghkio, Kangyi-Yaksauk (Lawksawk) road, the roads
between Nawnghkio, Kangyi, Taungkham, Magyiyay and Tarpalan were
laterite road, earthen road and cart-way in the past. Hence, it was
difficult to travel between southern and northern Shan State. In fact,
there were much difficulties to travel even from one village to
another in northern Shan State. In rainy season, no travel can be made
among villages. 

According to an engineer in construction site said that
Shwenyaung-Yaksauk-Kyaukgu-Taungkham-Kangyi-Nawnghkio road is to link
northern and southern parts of Shan State within a short The axis of
the road should be chosen as the most appropriate one in order meeting
to make the road modernize the set standard and quality.

The new road is 105 miles 7 furlongs long and 22 feet wide with 4-foot
platform on each side. Hence, the road is altogether 30 feet wide.
All-season road can bear weights up to 60-tons.

Because the new road, the trip from southern part to nothern Shan
State via Mandalay can now be shotened for 120miles 7 furlongs. It
contributes towards further strengthening of unity among national
races, promotion of trade and enchancing regional development.

Building of the all weather 30 feet wide sections of dirt road and 22
feet wide sections of  laterite road began on 1st August 1997. To
ensure smooth and convenient transport, to meet the set standards and
to complete the tasks in time, altogether 16 bends of the road was
asphalted, eight bridges were built and drainage ditches along it were
constructed.

It was built into a laterite road within six months period. Along the
new road, the Dokhtawady river is to be passed across by flying ferry.
When the survey works have completed, the Ministry of Construction
will build a bridge across the river.

Opening ceremony of the Yaksauk-Kyaukgu-Nawnghkio motor road was held
on 24-February-1998 at the Kyaukson Village in Yaksauk Township, Shan
State attended by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development
Council (SPDC) General Maung Aye and parties, local authorities and
peoples. The opening ceremony of the Nawnghkio-Kangyi-Yaksauk road
section was held at 9am the same day at the temporary pandal near
Kangyi village in Nawnghlio Township, northern Shan State.

The road was built in accordance with the guidance of SPDC by Tamadaw
(Myanmar Armed Forces) members of battalions and unit under the
North-East Command as well as the members of No. 55 Light Infantry
Division under the aegis of the Eastern Command, departmental
personnel of Public Works under the Ministry of Construction and it
should be name as "The road of Peace".

According to Myanmar Armed Forces members from the road construction
site said that "Now, the scene has changed. The present is different
from the past. Almost all the armed groups have returned to the legal
fold for peace. While they are discharging defence duties, now their
duties to carried out community work of building roads, dams and
bridges. In the next month they have to move to the another
construction site of Mon Chaung Dam Project in Tatkon Township.

The peace road has been linked successfully. Likewise, the motor road
linking the southern and northern parts of Shan State which was
aspired by Myanmar People have come into existence. It is in fact the
victory of peace gained by all Myanmar people.
