 (1)		Regional Development in Rakhine State Moving Ahead on Schedule
		Kissapanadi River Bridge Project in Kyauktaw Township will be 2,512.5 feet
long and will have a 28 feet wide road and six feet wide lanes on either side.
The 230-feet wide waterway under it will have 50-foot clearance. It can
withstand up to 60 tons. The bridge on Yangon-Sittway Highway will become a
vital link in travelling to Sittway, Ponnagyun, Kyauktaw and MraukU. It will
contribute much towards ensuring smooth and speedy flow of regional goods such
as rice and marine products and national peace and development. The government
had already spent large sums of money for preservation of cultural heritage in
MraukU. Pagodas and stupas in near collapse in MraukU had been restored. The
palace site of the MraukU Period is being excavated and cultural heritage
discovered. Ancient cultural sites indicate the high level of cultural
heritage of Rakhine State. The government has upgraded the Sittway Degree
College to a university in the education sector. New buildings for the
university are under construction, adding nine Basic Education High Schools,
25 middle schools and 255 primary schools were opened in Rakhine State between
1988 and 1998. In health sector, three rural health centres and four station
hospitals were opened. Five hospitals were upgraded from 16-bed hospitals to
25-bed ones. Flood prevention embankments were built and over 70,000 acres
were protected against salt water. Over 60,000 metric tons of chemical
fertilizer were imported and distributed to farmers between 1988 and 1998.
>From 1993 to 1998, over 200,000 gallons of imported diesel were distributed
for use in agriculture sector.
 
(2)		Myanmar Delegation Leaves for Malaysia
		A Myanmar delegation comprising Chairman of Asia Express (Ygn) Co Ltd,
Managing Director of Aye Yeik Mon Company and architect of Myanmar
Constructors Association left Yangon by air on 17 March to attend ASEAN
Constructors Federation (ACF) Meeting held in Malaysia from 18 to 21 March, as
observers at the invitation of Chairman of ASEAN Constructors Federation Tant
Yahon.
 
(3)		Workshop on Birth and Death Data Collection and Registration of Myanmar
Begins 
		A workshop on ensuring easy and smooth birth and death data  collection and
registration of Myanmar co-organized by Central Statistical Organization and
UNICEF began at the Medical Research Department in Yangon on 17 March. UNICEF
Resident Representative Dr Juan R Aguilar spoke of the workshop. Altogether 40
representatives of government organizations and NGO's are participating in the
two-day workshop.
 
(4)		Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, ZDH Jointly Conducts
Course on Business and Information
		A course on purchasing and controlling technique on goods for businesses and
information technology on management co-organized by Union of Myanmar Chamber
of Commerce and Industry and German small and medium enterprises association
(ZDH) was conducted at the training hall of Myanma Export and Import Services
on 17 March. Information Adviser Mr Wong Chim Yeow of Singapore is lecturing
at the five-day course. Altogether 45 trainees are attending it.
 
(5)		Information Subcommittee for FAO's 24th Asia and Pacific Regional
Conference Meets
		The Information Subcommittee for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's
24th Asia and Pacific Regional Conference held its meeting No 1/98 at the News
and Periodicals Enterprise Head Office on Theinbyu Street in Yangon on 17
March. The upcoming conference will be attended by delegates of 33 countries.
It will also be the first conference of its kind to be hosted by Myanmar.
 
(6)		Summer Intensive Classes for BEd Correspondence Course
		Summer intensive classes for and examinations for BEd 
Correspondence Course for 1997-98 academic year will be held at Yangon
Institute of Education. No 16 first year course and No 15 second year course
will be opened from 24 April to 14 May. The examinations will be held from 18
to 22 May.
 
(7)		Over 7.5 kilos of Opium Seized in Namhkam
		A combined team including members of mobile Namhkam Anti-Drug Squad,
regional defence intelligence unit, regional battalion and Namhkam police
station, acting on a tip-off, searched the house of Sai Aye Sai in Saryaydan
Ward, Namhkam Township. The authorities nabbed 0.003 kilos of Khatkhu, 0.466
kilos of liquid opium and 37 packets of opium weighing 7.5 kilos in his house.
		Action is taken against the owner of house and Kyan Sai of Kutkai Township,
staying in the same house, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrophic
Substances Law by Namhkam Police Station.

		Minister for Industry-1 received Chairman of Hiapcheong International
Trading Co Ltd Mr Ng Hing Sing and party of People's Republic of China at his
office.
