Indo-Burma border news (r)
Namphalong complex nearly complete
The Reconstruction of the Namphalong market complex,
just cross from gate no.2 at Moreh on the Indo-Myanmar
border has newly completed, a report from Moreh said.
Parts of the market complex, which has burnt down by
suspected Kuki militants in October last year, have already
been occupied by Myanmarese businessmen, the report
said.
The Myanmarese authorities are taking no chances this
time, setting up Army bunkers around the market complex.
It is understood that the bunkers will be manned 24 hours a
day.
Though the border is no longer sealed, entry of
Myanmarese into Moreh for business purposes has been
reduced to a trickle, according to the report. The
Myanmarese authorities offer no impediment to entry from
the India side, but they have started maintaining a stricter
vigil on the border. The Myanmarese Army has set up a
security post at gate no.2, where both men and women have
to undergo a thorough frisking before entering Myanmar.
Both male and female security personnel are stationed at
the post.
People from this side of the border no longer need to go as
far as Tamu for most needs, as most items are available
from the Namphalong market complex, according to the
report.
The state government has in the meantime come in for
severe criticism from many Moreh residents for its
lackadaisical attitude to the development of Moreh as a
business center, compared to the efforts being making by
the authorities across the border.
