BKK POST: SALWEEN SCANDAL: Censu

February 20, 1998

                            SALWEEN SCANDAL

              Censure motion is
              possible

The Salween logging scandal could be used for a censure
motion that might be lodged as soon as Wednesday.

Several opposition figures favour an attack on the government on
the basis of the destruction in Tak and Mae Hong Son before the
House goes into recess next month.

The case came to light after Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai
shunned the offer of a donation of five million baht, thought to
have been a logging-related kickback, to the Thai-help-Thai
              Fund.

Some opposition leaders felt the attack could be directed at
Chart Thai by accusing Banharn Silpa-archa, its leader, of
facilitating the rape of the Salween forests when he was interior
              minister and prime minister.

Mr Banharn is not, however, in the Chuan cabinet.

Vichai Chaijitvanichakul, a New Aspiration MP, said the
government should be able to identify the man behind the
kickback in a week and not a month as stated by Pongpol
              Adireksarn, the agriculture minister.
