(1)		Over K 5 Billion Spent in 1997-98 on Tasks for Development of Multi-
Faceted Education System
		The primary aim of today's national education policy is to nurture new
generation youths to be patriotic and to build and safeguard their motherland,
the multifaceted education system was adopted and is being applied for
improvement of student youths' morale, discipline and education, and training
and development programmes are being implemented for modernization of the
education system to catch up with the international standard. The government
spent K 1.055 billion on the education sector in 1988-89 and K 5.108 billion
in 1997-98. With the government's support and assistance, plus parent's and
people's contribution, over 2,500 computers have been installed at high and
middle schools in order to give training on computer science which is
essential for development of a modern education system
 
(2)		More Test Wells to be Drilled in Block M-9 off Mottama
		Minister for Energy and Minister for Finance and Revenue visited No 2
Drilling Rig of Yadana Offshore Gas Project of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise
on 2 January. Managing Director of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise and General
Manager of Total briefed them on drilling, prospects of Yedagon, Shwepyihtay
and other offshore test wells and progress of work. They looked into the
requirements in surveying and inspected gas wells which are ready to produce.
The No2 Drilling Rig is projected to drill two vertical wells and 12
horizontal wells. It has already drilled one vertical well and four horizontal
wells successfully. Another five horizontal wells are being drilled. Geco
Resolution is conducting 3D seismic survey near Shwepyihtay Test Well, which
is producing gas on commercial scale in Block M-9 off Mottama.
 
(3)		Meeting on Conducting Biotechnology and other Post-Graduate Courses
		A coordination meeting on conducting biotechnology and other 
post-graduate courses at Yangon Institute of Technology of the Ministry of
Science and Technology was held in the assembly hall of YIT on 2 January. A
comprehensive plan, after establishing the Ministry of Science and Technology,
has been implemented to produce intellectuals and intelligentsia who meet the
international standard in the fields of science and engineering and on a par
with those from the ASEAN member nations and the neighbouring countries and
computer courses are conducted on an extensive scale in the states and
divisions with the aim of advancing computer technology in Myanmar. Master or
Ph.D degree holders majoring in related subjects and having teaching
experience may apply for full-time tutor posts for Biotechnology Course to be
conducted in YIT. They will be appointed to the appropriate posts at the
Ministry of Science and Technology. Similarly M.B.B.S, B.E.(Civil),
B.E.(Chemical), B.Ag.Sc, M.Sc.(Zoology) and M.Sc. (Botany) degree holders
wishing to attend this course as service personnel of the Ministry of Science
and Technology may apply for admission and they will be appointed to the
suitable posts. In addition, Engineering Geology Post-Graduate Diploma Course
and Master Degree Courses on Engineering Physics (Electronics ), Engineering
Chemistry, Engineering Mathematics and Nuclear Technology will soon be
conducted at the same time .
 
(4)		Master's Degree Courses, Diploma Courses in Medicine Open
		It is a very significant day in the history of medical education of Myanmar,
for 18 Master's degree courses and 21 diploma courses in medicine can be
opened at the same time.Two objectives of the Ministry of Health are to enable
every citizen to attain full life expectancy and enjoy longevity and to ensure
that every citizen is free from disease. The three strategies are being
implemented widespread dissemination of health information and education to
reach the rural areas, enhancing disease preventive activities and providing
effective treatment. The institutions under the Medical Science Department
have been turning out staff essential for the development of the health
system. Efforts are being made to improve health employees qualitatively and
quantitatively for the future need. The Ministry of Health opens Master's
degree courses in medicine every year, thereby producing 2,143 medical post-
graduate degree holders, and Dr.Med.Sc course has been opened with 147
trainees.
 
(5)		Four Armed Group Members Exchange Arms for Peace 
		In the area of Southern Command, Deputy Company Commander Pa Htoo of No 3
Company, No 7 Battalion, No 3 Brigade of Kayin National Union armed group in
the area of Coastal Region Command, Aye Kyaing of Myeik-Dawei Allied Front of
the outlawed Burma Communist Party armed group. Likewise, in the area of
South-East Command, Pvts Kyaw Kha and Kyaw Che Gay of remaining of the
outlawed Kayin National Union No 16 Battalion of No 6 Brigade exchanged arms
for peace. They were welcomed by officials of respective units and columns,
who attended to their needs .
 
(6)		Workshop No 2/97 on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point Ends
		The Workshop No 2/97 on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP),
Jointly organized by the Food and Drug Administration of the Ministry of
Health and the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Livestock and
Fisheries, concluded at the Fisheries Department in Yangon on 2nd Jaunary. A
total of 43 trainees attended the four-day workshop.
