(1) 		Central Organizing Committee for Myanma Trade Fair 98 Meets
		Central Organizing Committee for Myanma Trade Fair 98 held its meeting at
the Ministry of Commerce on 1st January. Myanma Trade Fair 98 will be held in
Yangon Trade Centre, Lower Pazundaung Street, Mingalar Taungnyunt, from 27
February to 5 March in 1998.
 
(2)		Cooperative Fair (Mandalay) on 24 January
		Cooperative Fair (Mandalay) Will be held at Thirimandala Market,
Aungmyaythazan Township, Mandalay, for five days beginning 24 January 1998.
Cooperatives of the 14 States and Divisions will participate in the fair,
aimed at extending markets and boosting production of export substitute goods.
Products of cottage industries, entrepreneurs and private companies will be
also displayed at the fair, which will include advertising, demonstration of
products, trading and signing business contracts.
 
(3)		Cruiseliner ms Mermoz Arrives with 450 Tourists
		Under the arrangement of Myanmar Hotels and Tourism Service and Myanmar GG
Tour, cruiseliner ms Mermoz arrived Yangon Port at 8.30 am on 1 January 1998
with 450 tourists aboard. The tourists toured Shwedagon Pagoda, National
Museum and downtown Yangon. They were entertained to variety dances on board
the cruiseliner by Myanma Hotels and Tourism Service at night.
 
(4)		Computer Diploma Course to be Open
		The Institute of Computer Science and Technology will open the NCC course
(International Higher Diploma in Computer Studies IHDCS) in January 1998.
 
                             OFFICE CALLS IN YANGON ON 1 JANUARY

		Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received Managing
Director Mr Tae-Chul Shin and party of Daewoo Corporation of Republic of
Korea, General Manager Mr M Tkegai and party, General Manager of Itochu
Corporation Mr Naohiro Jokei and party at his office.

(1)		Government Determined to See Peace in the Entire Nation
		Chairman of the Work Committee for the Development of Border Areas and
National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt, ministers and party met the Kachin nationalities leaders headed by
U Zaw Mai in the meeting hall of the KIO Headquarters in Kachin State on 31
December. 
 
		The Secretary-1 then told them that the State Peace and Development Council
was constituted to expedite work for the speedy emergence of peaceful, modern
and developed new nation in the interest of the entire national people,
favourable foundation has been laid and arrangements are being made for the
progress of all areas including border areas. Next, U Zaw Mai said on behalf
of the KIO Central Committee members and KIO members that the KIO secured
peace in early 1994 after realizing the goodwill of the government towards the
national races and cooperated with the latter. At present, he said, the region
has developed day by day. He said the KIO supports the formation of the State
Peace and Development Council on 15 November 1997 for the emergence of
discipline flourishing democracy and peaceful, modern and developed new
nation. He said people do not want undisciplined democracy. He said KIO
believes the government objectives will be realized and the organization will
continue to work together with the government. Not only the KIO but also the
entire Kachin State welcome the government's endeavours for the well-being of
the Union and the entire mass of national races. The Secretary-1 called on the
local people to extend a helping hand to the development of border areas and
national races although the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National
Races and Development Affairs is responsible, it is learnt.
		
(2)		Forest Department Planting 41.5 million Trees Annually
		Myanmar Timber Entrepreneurs Association held its annual general meeting at
International Business Centre on 31 December. Production capacity of Myanma
Timber Enterprise, the situation of world market, participation of the public
and entrepreneurs in Forest Department's plantation of 41.5 million trees
annually for commercial use, fuel wood and reafforestation, formation of Arid
Region Greening Department in Mandalay for reafforestation of 57 townships in
13 districts of Magway, Mandalay and Sagaing Divisions and projects which are
being jointly implemented by MTE and Forest Products Joint-Venture Corporation
Ltd are being explained.
 
		Plans to render assistance to private companies, and wood-based industries
to take part in projects which are being undertaken jointly by MTE and FPJVC
were discussed. Domestic timber trading will be gradually privatised and MTE
will concentrate only on export business in the future, it is learnt.
 
(3)		PRC, Japan Donation for MMCWA
		The cash donation ceremony for Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare
Association by staff families of the Embassy of People's Republic of China was
held on 31 December in Yangon. Likewise, Ravac Japan also donated cash to the
MMCWA on 31 December.
