(1)		Senior General Than Shwe's Departure Statement in Kuala Lumpur
		At the invitation of His Excellency the Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr
Mahathir bin Mohamad of Malaysia, His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe,
Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the
Union of Myanmar, visited Malaysia from 13 to 16 December 1997 and attended
the Second ASEAN Informal Summit Meeting/30th ASEAN Anniversary Commemorative
Summit and the Informal Summit Meeting of ASEAN Heads of State/Government and
Heads of State/Government of the People's Republic of China, Japan and the
Republic of Korea held in Kuala Lumpur from 14 to 16 December 1997.
		The meetings held during the second ASEAN Informal Summit, in an 
atmosphere of informality, afforded the opportunity for the ASEAN Heads of
State/Government , the Heads of State/Government of People's Republic of
China, Japan and Republic of Korea to get to know one another more intimately
besides having the opportunity to exchange views on matters relating to
political, economic and social fields. The leaders also had the chance to
exchange views on cooperation among the Southeast Asian countries as well as
cooperation with the People's Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of
Korea at the regional and international levels. 
		To consolidate and enhance the growth and development of the past thirty
years the leaders looked ahead and crafted a vision statement and adopted it
in ASEAN Vision 2020 document on the occasion of the Second ASEAN Informal
Summit Meeting. Joint Statements were also issued after the Informal Summit
Meeting of ASEAN leaders and the Leaders of (i) People's Republic of China,
(ii) Japan, (iii) Republic of Korea respectively to guide ASEAN relations into
the next century with its important partners in development. 
		While in Kuala Lumpur, His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe paid an
audience jointly with the ASEAN Heads of State/Government on His Majesty The
Yang Di Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. Chairman Senior General Than Shwe also had
separate meetings with His Excellency President Mr Jiang Zemin of the People's
Republic of China and also His Excellency Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Mahathir
bin Mohamad of Malaysia; His Excellency Prime Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong of the
Republic of Singapore; His Excellency Prime Minister Mr Chuan Leekpai of the
Kingdom of Thailand; His Excellency Prime Minister Mr Phan Van Khai of the
Socialist Republic of Vietnam and His Excellency Prime Minister Mr Khamtay
Siphandone of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to discuss bilateral,
regional and other matters of mutual interest.
		ASEAN leaders witnessed the signing ceremony of the Memorandum on ASEAN
Foundation by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the signing ceremony of the
Protocol to Implement the Initial Package of Commitments Under the ASEAN
Framework Agreement on Services by the ASEAN Economic Ministers. Senior
General Than Shwe received the United Nations Secretary-General HE Mr Kofi
Annan who was in Kuala Lumpuur as a guest of the Malaysian Government and
exchanged the views on matters of mutual interest.
		The Second ASEAN Informal Summit Meeting, and the Informal Summit Meeting of
ASEAN Heads of State/Government and Heads of State/Government of the People's
Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea have served to further
promote the understanding to facilitate closer cooperation among the Heads of
State/Government of the region auguring enhancement of the existing ties of
friendship and cooperation among the countries of the region. The Meetings
also provided the opportunity to renew Myanmar's commitment to enhance
cooperation in implementation of the noble ideals and aims of ASEAN. Myanmar
looks forward to make meaningful contribution towards peace, stability and
prosperity of the region as a whole.
 
(2)		Myanmar Texcamp to Set Up Garment Factory
		Myanmar Texcamp Industries Ltd on 17 December signed a land-lease contract
with Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development to set up a
garment factory in Hlinethaya Industrial Zone.
 
(3)		Fukken Co Ltd of Japan Opens Branch Office in Yangon
		Opening ceremony of Yangon Branch Office of Fukken Co Ltd, the  Consulting
Engineers from Japan, was held at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel on 17 December. The
branch office will carry out investigation and design works for infrastructure
development projects in Myanmar.
 
(4)		Myanmar Delegation Leaves for Indonesia 
		Myanmar delegation led by Director of Development of Border Areas and
National Races Department left Yangon on 17 December to attend the ASEAN
Expert Group Meeting and Rural Development and Poverty Eradication to be held
in Yogyakarta in Indonesia from 17 to 19 December.
 
(5)		Preparations for Opening of International Theravada Buddhist 
		Missionary University Inspected
		Officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs inspected preparations for
opening of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University on
Dhammapala Hill in Mayangon Township on 17 December. The university will open
in November next year. Construction of halls for men and women, mess hall and
halls for lecturer Sayadaws were also inspected.
 
(6)		275 Drug-Related Cases Exposed in November 
		The Armed Forces, Myanmar Police Force and Customs Department 
exposed 275 drug-related cases, seizing 788.9 kilos of opium in 38 cases,
394.89 kilos of heroin in 126 cases, 15.29 kilos of marijuana in 26 cases,
1.82 kilos of low grade opium in 15 cases, 3.91 kilos of opium oil in two
cases, 8.7 kilos of brown opium in one case, 48.36 litres of Phensedyl in nine
cases, 36,604 tablets of amphetamine in eight cases, 156 gallons of acetic
anhydride in two cases, 1,947 gallons of spirit, 263 gallons of Lysol, 1,331
gallons of ether, 145 gallons of sulphuric acid, 105 gallons of chloroform, 98
gallons of hydrochloric acid, 175 kilos of ammonium chloride, 390 kilos of
soda, 700 kilos of bone charcoal, 41 cases for failure to register and other
seven additional cases. A total 437 persons--364 men and 73 women--were booked
in 275 cases.
 
OFFICE CALLS IN YANGON ON 17 DECEMBER
(A)		Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin
received General Manager Mr Stewart Yen of Unicorn International of Singapore
and party at his office.

(B)		Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than received General Manager Mr Chua
Chay Jin of Myanmar Kuok Oils and Grains Pte Ltd, Singapore and party at his
office.
