(1)		New Dams Being Built to Boost Irrigated Areas
		Yaytho Reservoir Project near Letpankhon village, Ottwin Township is under
construction. This dam is 750 feet long and 60 feet high. will irrigate 2,000
acres and will supply drinking water to the region and the Bawdigon Sugar
Mill, which has been projected to built in the area. In Phyu Township
Ngamwechaung Reservoir Project. Located four miles west of Zeyawady, It will
be 800 feet long and 55 feet high. The reservoir project including another two
dams, one 1,000 long and another 460 feet, will Irrigate 1,200 areas and will
supply 1.2 billion gallons of water per year to Zeyawady Sugar Mill. The Bawni
Reservoir Project near Bawniyathit village, DaikU Township is under
construction. This dam is 5,615 feet long and 85 feet high, will irrigate
9,000 areas of crops when completed. Included in Sittoung River Basin Project,
It will prevent silting and erosion at streams flowing between the river and
Bago Yoma.
 
(2)		Secretary and Work Committees of CCDAC Meet
		A coordination meeting of Secretary of Central Committee for Drug Abuse
Control and work committees under CCDAC took place at Myanmar Police Force
Headquarter on 11 December. The Secretary and officials of work committees
discussed implementation of guidelines given by Secretary-1 of the State Peace
and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt at the special meeting of CCDAC held
on 3 December are as follows to supervise functions of CCDAC forming a
monitoring committee. To form a committee for being accurate in data on drug
eradication tasks, to build a worldclass museum on drug eradication in Yangon,
to hold exhibitions, contests and talks district-and zone-wise, to carry out
educational task against drug abuse for students, to develop curriculum on
drug abuse and AIDS in the schools, to increase public education programmes
and to conduct collecting data on drug addicts and those who contract AIDS
through needle inflection as quickly infection as possible. Ministries
concerned to effectively cooperate in drug eradication projects being
implemented by CCDAC and the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and
National Races and Development Affairs with international assistance. To
include NGOs, the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Myanmar Red
Cross Society, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Myanmar
National Work Committee for Women's Affairs, in the work committee for public
education and to award prizes for drug seizures.
 
 (3)		Two Winners in News Photo Contest of ASEAN Member Countries 	Awarded
Prizes
		Two staff photographers who won silver in the news photo contest of ASEAN
members countries held at the 12th CAJ General Assembly were awarded prizes at
the Ministry of Information on 11 December. Seven photos of the two which
appeared in the dailies were presented to the contest through two journalists,
Chairman U Myo Thant (Maung Hsu Shin) and CEC Member U Kyi Nyunt (Chitkyiyay
Kyi Nyunt) of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association, who attended the
general assembly held in Manila from 2 to 5 December.
 
(4)		Housing & Building '97 at Tatmadaw Convention Centre
		Housing & Building '97 sponsored by TTF (Yangon) Co Ltd with the
collaboration of the Ministry of Construction was opened at Tatmadaw
convention Centre on 11 December. Housing projects, items of office equipment,
household good, safes and tiles, construction equipment and technology are on
display at the exhibition till 14 December. It is being held with the aims of
development of housing, emergence of worldclass buildings, exchange of new
construction technology between local and foreign entrepreneurs and extensive
and effective use of construction equipment.
 
(5)		Tourists Arrives Myeik
		Under the arrangement of South East Asia live Boards Co Ltd and Myanma
Hotels and Tourism, tourists comprising Britons, Singaporeans, Canadians,
Americans, French and Belgians arrived Seiknge Port of Myeik through Phuket by
yacht Crescent on 6 December morning for a week in Kawthoung-Myeik Island. The
Tourists visited laykyunhsimee Pagoda and Seiknge market in Myeik.
 
(6)		Myanmar Win Asian Region Amateur Golf Club C'ship
		Ayeyawady Golf Club of Myanmar won championship trophy in Asian Region
Amateur Golf Club Tourney, beating other 12 participating teams in Jakarta,
Indonesia. Teams from Myanmar, the Republic of Korea, Guam, Thailand, Vietnam,
Singapore, the Philippines, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Nepal and
Hong Kong took part in the tourney which was held from 6 to 9 December in the
city. Golfers of the club Cpl Aye Lwin, Ye Lwin Aung and Arka Han won with 444
strokes. Cpl Aye Lwin also won first prize with 157 strokes in individual
play.
 
(7)		NCC Diploma Courses Opened
		The opening ceremony of NCC Diploma Courses and talks on NCC Education
Services were held at International Business Centre at 9 am on 11 December
attended by Rector of Institute of Computer Science and Technology Dr Kyaw
Thein and officials, departmental officials, students and trainees. Director
Mr Claus Henning of British Council and Managing Director U Aung Zaw Myint of
Winner Computer Group explained about NCC Diploma Course. NCC Regional Manager
Mr Chris Higgins gave lecture on NCC Education Services. The Winner Computer
Group will conduct these diploma courses.
 
OFFICE CALLS IN YANGON ON 11 DECEMBER
(A)		Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and national
Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt
received nationalities leaders of Special Region 2 in Shan State (North) at
Tatmadaw Guest House on 11 December. They discussed development of transport,
generating hydro-electric power, agriculture, education, eradication of
narcotic drug and other sectors in the region.
(B)		Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein received Mrs Kayoko Hosakawa and
party of Japan Committee Vaccines for the World's Children, accompanied by
Resident Representative of UNICEF, at his office. They discussed rendering of
assistance for polio control programme.
(C)		Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received Managing Director Mr Pang
Kai Man of Hong Kong based Victoria Garment Ltd at 12:30 pm and Director-
General Mr Carol Auyang and party of China machinery Complete Equipment
Engineering Corporation at his office. 
(D)		Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint received
chairman Mr Toshiyuki Habara and party Limited at Head Office of the
Irrigation Department in Kanbe.
(E)		Secretary of Myanmar Red Cross Society Dr Ko Ko Gyi received Head of
International Relations of Korean National Red Cross Association Mr Chan Uk
Park and party in the hall of MRCS on Strand Road. They discussed measure for
giving medical treatment to some Townships of Yangon Division. The Korean
National Red Cross Association in cooperation with MRCS will carry out
community welfare activities in Kyauktan, Thanlyin, Dagon Myothit (South),
Htantabin, Hlinethaya, Shwepyitha, Insein, Kungyangon, Twantay and Dalla
Townships in Yangon Division till 19 December and also visit the Institute of
Nursing and Children's Hospital. 
 
NLD Vice-Chairman Resigned
		It is learnt that Vice-Chairman of the National League for Democracy, U Kyi
Maung has stopped going to the residence of Daw Su Kyi and the party
Headquarters and has not attended the Central Executive Committee meetings.
Also he did not attend the lunch-meeting at the residence of the U.S. Charge'
de Affairs ai on 12 December. 
		According to the NLD sources the reasons of his resignation from the NLD
were as such:
		(a)	Conflict of attitudes between U Kyi Maung and Daw Su Kyi.
		(b)	Daw Su Kyi's insistence on a deliberate and confrontational stance
against the Government under the pretext of reorganizing the youths in various
townships. 
		(c)	Daw Su Kyi's arrogant and insulting attitude towards the senior 	and
elderly member of the Party.
		(d)	Daw Su Kyi was against U Kyi Maung's English Language to the party
youths.
		(e)	Daw Su Kyi purposely ignored the elderly and parental advice of U Kyi
Maung on her behaviour exceeding the necessary and customary relationship with
the male youths of the party.
