YANGON, 17 NOV Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council
Deputy  Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army)
General Maung Aye  received Executive Vice-President of Arco International
Oil and Gas Company Mr William E  Wade and party of the
 United States at Zeya Thiri Beikhman on Konemyinttha at 3 pm today.

 Also present together with General Maung Aye were Secretary-1 of the State
Peace and  Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nylmt, Secretary-2 of the State
Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 of the State Peace
and Development Council Lt-Gen Win  Myint, member of the State Peace and
Development Council Commander of Yangon Command  Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than,
Minister for Energy U Khin Maung Thein and Director-General of  Protocol
Department Thura U Aung Htet.

YANGON, 17 Nov Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment
 Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Executive Director of
Soctek Sedirian  Berhad of Malaysia Mr Calvin Ho Han Leong and party at his
office this morning.

 Present also were officials of MIC Office.

(3)   National Convention Convening Commission meets
 
YANGON, 17 Nov -National Convention Convening Commission held its meeting at
the  Commission Office this afternoon.

 It was attended by Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission
Lt-Gen Myo Nyunt,  Vice-Chairmen Lt-Gen Maung Thint and Brig-Gen Myo Thant
and commission members.
Lt-Gen Myo Nyunt delivered an address.

 Then, National Convention Convening Work Committee and Management Committee
reported on  matters pertaining to the National Convention.

 Lt-Gen Myo Nyunt spoke of requirements and the meeting ended in the evening.

 The Adaptation of Expressions Law, 1997

(The State Peace and Development Council Law No 1/97)
 The 3rd Waning Day of Tazaungmon, 1359 ME

 (17th November, 1997)
The State Peace and Development Council hereby enacts the following Law:

 1. (a) This Law shall be called the Adaptation of Expressions Law, 1997;

      (b) It shall be deemed to have come into force from the 1st Waning day
of Tazaungmon, 1359 ME  (15th November, 1997).

 2. The following expressions contained in any existing law, rule,
proclamation, procedure,  regulation, bye-law, order, notification and
directive shall be deemed to have been substituted as  expedient by the
expressions shown against each:-

(6)   Chinese medical delegation tours Yangon Division

YANGON, 17 Nov - The medical delegation led by Maj-Gen Li Chaolin of the
People's  Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China visited the
office, of the Tatmadaw Medical  Research and Development Committee at No 2
Defence Services General Hospital this morning.

 They were welcomed there by Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein
Han and  officials.

 Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Deputy Director of Medical Services Col Aung Naing,
Commandant of  No 2 DSGH Col Min Naing and officials met the medical
delegation and had discussions.

 Then, the medical delegation observed the operation theatre, the renal unit
and the radiology unit.

 They were conducted around by specialist Col Tun Myint, medical specialist
Col Aye Pe and  officials.

 Next, the medical delegation visited Thanlyin Bridge, the Shwedagon Pagoda
and the Defence  Services Museum.

(7)   Over 1,500 monastic education schools opened in 243  townships

YANGON, 17 NOV-The Monastic Education Supervisory Central Committee held its
fifth  meeting at the Ministry of Religious Affairs with a supplication by
Minister for Religious Affairs  Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.

 The meeting was attended by member Sayadaws of the Central Committee,
Director-General of  the Religious Affairs Department U Arnt Maung,
Director-General of the Department for  Promotion and Propagation of the
Sasana U Sann Lwin, officials of the respective ministries and
 State/Division Religious Affairs Department Heads.

(8)   Mandalay Urban Development Project inspected

YANGON, 17 Nov-Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council
 Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tin
Soe,  Chairman of Mandalay Development Committee Mayor Col Sein Win Aung and
officials inspected  Mandalay Urban Development Project, construction of
Circular Road and Strand Road on 15  November.

 The commander and party inspected planting of trees and flowers at median on
Strand Road,  paving of road and preparations for construction.

 The commander inspected construction of Mandalay Kandawgyi (East) Ring Road
and sewerage  and drainage.

(9)   Medicines, medical equipment presented for Myitkyina  Township MCWA

YANGON, 17 Nov-In accord with the objectives of Myanmar Maternal and Child
Welfare  Association and under the sponsorship of Kachin State MCWA,
Myitkyina Township MCWA  launched a programme of rendering health care and
giving treatment and nutritious food to children  at the office building of
the association on 15 November morning.

 Present were Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council
Commander of Northern  Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and officials, member of the
Panel of Patrons of MMCWA Patron  of the Supervisory Committee for Kachin
State MCWA wife of the Commander Daw San San Yi,  Vice-Chairman of MMCWA
Director-General of Health Planning Department of the Ministry of  Health Dr
Kyi Soe, executives of Myitkyina Township MCWA and ward elders.

 Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, wife Daw San San Yi and Dr Kyi Soe inspected rendering
health care and  giving treatment and nutritious food.

 Then, they inspected construction of a new clinical building on the compound
of the office of the  association.

 The commander gave instructions and attended to their requirements.

 Dr Kyi Soe handed medicines and medical equipment for Myitkyina Township
MCWA to Daw  San San Yi.
 Afterwards, officials reported on arrangements for prevention of malaria,
tuberculosis and AIDS,  treatment and educative talks.

 The commander attended to their requirements.

 Later, the vice-chairman of MMCWA met members of Myitkyina Township MCWA at
No 1  Basic Education High School, Myitkyina, at 1 pm.

 Chairman of the Supervisory Committee for Kachin State MCWA Head of Kachin
State Health  Department Dr Joseph and Dr Kyi Soe explained work being
carried out and future tasks of the  association.

 Officials of Township and Ward MCWAs reported on work being done by
respective  associations.

 Than, Dr Kyi Soe and Daw San San Yi spoke.

(10)   Executive Vice-President of Arco Inter'l Oil Co calls on  Minister for
NPED

YANGON, 17 NOV-Executive Vice-President Mr William E Wade of Arco
International Oil  Co of the United States called on Minister for National
Planning and Economic Development  Brig-Gen Abel at his' office this morning.
Present were officials of Ministry of National Planning and Economic
Development.  _________________

(11)   Training of MOs on Drug Abuse Surveillance System and  Management of 
          Substance Abuse opens

YANGON, 17 Nov - An opening ceremony of Training of Medical Officers on Drug
Abuse  Surveillance System and Management of Substance Abuse was held at the
Psychiatric Hospital this  morning.

 It was attended by Secretary of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control
Police Maj-Gen  Soe Win, Joint Secretary of CCDAC Police Col Ngwe Soe Tun,
Medical Superintendent of  Psychiatric Hospital Dr Toe Aung, Mr Toru Iwasaki
of UNDCP office, and trainee medical  officers of states and Divisions.

 In his address, Police Maj-Gen Soe Win spoke of the need for finding all
possible ways and means  for control of drug abuse, the bio-socio-economic
problem.

 He said that as all are aware, this problem is threatening the mankind, and
spoke of the need to  collect proper statistics in tackling this problem.

 He said the purpose of the course is to collect proper data for demand
reduction as well as the  statistics on drug addicts which is crucial for
control of drug abuse.

 Medical officers, he said, have to discharge duties in the drug abuse
surveillance system in  cooperation with regional authorities and also have
to support the law enforcement bodies in  demand reduction measures.

 He said Myanmar will have to participate in the ASEAN members' three-year
narcotic drug control  projects individually and collaboratively, and urged
all officials to make preparations to act as a  host in implementing these
projects.

(12)   Women's Chapter of MWJA formed
 
YANGON, 17 NOV-Central Executive Committee members of Myanmar Writers and
 Journalists Association and women literati, intellectuals and intelligentsia
discussed formation of  Women's Chapter at MWJA Headquarters at Sarpay
Beikman on Merchant Street this morning.

 Chairman of MWA U Myo Thant (Maun Hsu Shin), CEC member Daw Yin Yin (Saw Mon
Nyin)  and Joint Secretary Woman scholars discussed on Myanmar women's
measures of olden and  present days, need for literary world, preservation of
Myanmar culture, publicity of Myanma  literature, culture and social affairs
in the world and publishing
 them in Myanmar and English and relations with literary organizations among
Asian regions.

 Next, Women's Chapter of MWJA was formed.

(13) Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's  Affairs tour Shan State

YANGON, 17 Nov Myanmar-National Working Committee for Women's Affairs met
Shan  State (East) Working Committee for Women's Affairs in Kengtung Township
on 14 November  morning.

MNWCWA explained functions at the town hall in the afternoon. Maj-Gen Thein
Sein extended greetings.

 Secretary of the committee Director-General U Than Po of Social Welfare
Department spoke.

 Vice-Chairperson and Acting Leader of Health Group Dr May May Yi, Leader of
Education  Group Prof Daw Khin Aye Win, Leader of the Sub-committee on
prevention of Violence Against  Women and for Resettlement Vice-President of
Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association  Dr Khin Win Shwe, Leader of
Economic Group Daw Sein Sein, Leader of Cultural Group Daw  Thein Thein Nyunt
and Leader of Young Women's Group Daw Khin Myo Myint explained  functions
groupwise.

 Maj-Gen Thein Sein presented K 300,000 to MNWCWA.

 U Maung Maung Lwin and Daw Sein Sein (Tanpadipa Construction) presented K
100,000 to  Shan State (East) WCWA and local people K 110,000 to Eastern
Command WCWA.

 The next day, members of MNWCWA visited a looming school at Model Akha
Village, a child  care centre and a women's domestic training school in
Kengtung.

 In Taunggyi Township, they met Shan State Working Committee for Women's
Affairs. Protection of women from violence and resettlement is their main
task during the tour.

 Wife of Maj-Gen Thein Sein, local authorities, officials, members of WCWAs
at different levels  and NGOs were present.

 Chairman of MNWCWA Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and
Resettlement Brig-Gen  Maung Kyi explained organization of the association.
 Leaders of the respective groups also took part in the discussions.

 U Aung Ko Win, Sudhammasingi Daw Nang Than Htwe and family presented K 4
million to  MNWCWA, K 1 million to Shan State WCWA and K 200,000 to Eastern
Command WCWA.
U Maung Maung Lwin and Daw Sein Sein presented K 100,000 to Eastern Command
WCWA.

(14)  Deputy Minister for Health receives Director of Orbis  International
 
YANGON, 17 NOV Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo received Director Ms Kate
 Gibson and party of Orbis International at Medical Research Department at 10
am today.

 Present also were officials of the ministry.
