(1)   Sibinthaya Myoma Market in Kyauktan adds new sparkle to township
 
YANGON, 23 Oct -Secretary-1 of the State Law and Order Restoration Council
Lt-Gen  Khin Nyunt attended the inauguration ceremony of Sibinthaya Myoma
Market in Kyauktan  Township this morning.

 Present also were Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races
Development Affairs  Lt-Gen Maung Thint,members of Security and Management
Committee Lt-Gen Aye Thoung and  Vice-Admiral Than Nyunt, Minister for Social
Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Soe  Myint, Chief-Justice U Aung
Toe, Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Chairman of Civil Service  Selection and
Training Board U Maung Maung Gyi, Minister at the Office of Chairman of the
State 
Law and Order Restoration Council Brig-Gen Myo Thant, Minister for Transport
Lt-Gen Thein  Win, Secretary of Multiparty Democracy General Election
Commission U Aye Maung, Work  Committee member U Thaung Nyunt, Commder of
Yangon command Mja-Gen Khin Maung Than  directors-general and officials,
members of Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association,  members of Union
Solidarity and Development Association, dance troupe and students.  At the
auspicious time 10.10 am, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt unveiled the
signboard of 
Sibinthaya Myoma Market and Minister Lt-Gen Maung Thint formally opened the
market.

 Then, the Secretary-1, ministers and party inspected it.

 Township Executive Officer U Tun Aung Khin briefed the Secretary-1 and party
on the construction of market and U Kyi Win thanked the  offilcials.

 U Tun Aung Khin presented commemorative pennant and gifts to Secretary-1
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt  and ministers.

 The two-storey iron reinforced concrete market comprises 200-shops. The
construction began on  11 May 1996 and it cost over k 30 million.

(2)   Thanlyin Yadana Housing Project inspected
 
YANGON, 23 Oct Secretary-1 of the State Law and Order Restoration Council
Lt-Gen Khin  Nyunt, accompanied by Chairman of Yangon Division Law and Order
Restoration Council  Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Director-General of Human
Settlement and Housing Development  Department U Arnt Kyaw and officials of
Office of the State Law and Order Restoration Council, 
inspected Thanlyin Yadana Housing Project this morning and gave necessary
instructions. The project is situated on the site of Thanlyin Township near
the confluence- of Bago River and  Yangon River, jointly implemented by Human
Settlement and Housing Development Department  and Htut Khaung Development Co
Ltd. Accompanied by officials, the Secretary-1 arrived at the  office of the
housing - project and was welcomed by officials.First, Director-General U
Arnt Kyaw  and Managing Director of Htut Khaung Development Co Ltd U Ohn
Myint briefed the Secretary-1  on progress of work and future programmes.The
Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions to  officials and inspected scale
model of the project.

(3)   Deputy Minister for Education leaves to attend 29th UNESCO Session
 
YANGON, 23 Oct Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Naing-Ngan UNESCO National 
Commission Deputy Minister for Education Col Kyi Maung and Secretary of the
Commission  Rector of Yangon Institute of Education U Han Tin left here by
air for Paris to attend the 29th  Session of the UNESCO General Conference
from 21 October to 12 November.

 They were seen off by Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, Deputy
Resident  Representative of UNDP Mr lames Rawley, departmental heads under
the Ministry of Education  and their families.

 Myanmar's Permanent Representative to UNESCO Ambassador to France U Nyunt
Tin,  Counsellor U Than Tun of Myanmar Embassy in Paris and Second Secretary
U Aung Myint will  also attend the session as Myanmar delegation members.

(4)   Secretary-1 receives Mon national leaders
 
YANGON, 23 Oct Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and
National Races Secretay-1 of the State Law and Order Restoration Council
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chairman of New Mon State Party (NMSP) Nai Shwe
Kyin, General Secretary Nai Yattha and members, and peace negotiators at
Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 3 pm  today.

 Present also were Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races
and Development  Affairs Lt-Gen Maung Thint, Minister for Finance and Revenue
Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Health U Saw Tun, Deputy Minister for Mines U
Myint Thein, Deputy Minister for  Forestry U Aung Phone, Deputy Chief of the
Office of Strategic Studies and Deputy Director of Defence Services
Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Director-General of the Office of the State
 Law and Order Restoration Council Lt- Col Pe Nstein heads of department and
officials..

 They discussed smooth transport, education, health and development of the
region.

YANGON, 23 Oct - Member of the State Law and Order Restoration Council
Minister for  Hotels and Tourism Lt-Gen Kyaw Ba received Senior Managing
Director Mr Takehiko Kato of  Nikko International Ltd of lapan, President Mr
Yasuhiro Matsuda of Connection International Ltd  and party at his office at
1 pm today.

 Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism,
Managing Director  U Soe Thein of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and
other officials were also present.

(6)   Minister for Energy receives Senior V-P of Sambawang  Marine & Offshore

        Engineering

YANGON, 23 Oct - Minister for Energy U Khin Maung Thein received Senior
 Vice-President of Sambawang Marine & Offshore Engineering Mr M P Premraj at
his office  yesterday.

 Present also were Director-General of Energy Planning Department U Soe Myint
and Managing  Director of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise U Kyaw Nyein.

(7)   WIPO National Seminar on Intellectual Property concludes

YANGON, 23 Oct-The WIPO International Seminar on Intellectual Property at the
Yangon  University Diamond Jubilee Conference Center on Pyay Road, organized
by the World Intellectual  Property Organization in cooperation with the
Ministry of Science and Technology, concluded  today.

 The seminar started off today with Salient features of the Agreement of
Trade-Related Aspects of  Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS Agreement,
1994), with Mr Patrick Smith taking up General Provisions, Basic Principles,
Transitional and Institutional Arrangements. He was later joined by Mr  Henry
Olsson in clarifying Standards Concerning the Availability, Scope and Use of
Intellectual  Property Rights.

 The two speakers then took up Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights
under the TRIPS  Agreement.

 Then, U Kyaw Aye, Director-General, Office of the Attorney-General, spoke on
Intellectual  Property Legislation and Administration in Myanmar.

After lunch, Main Features of a Modern Intellectual Property System were
elucidated, Mr Smith  taking up Industrial Property Rights and Mr Olsson,
Copyright.

 After Panel Discussion on Modernization of the Intellectual Property System
in Myanmar, the  seminar drew to a close Dinner was hosted in honour of the
occasion at Shukhintha Restaurant in Thakayta..

(7)   188 jade lots fetch over $ 850,000
 
YANGON, 23 Oct - Patron of Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee Minister
for  Mines Lt-Gen Kyaw Min inspected the Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium this
morning.

 He was welcomed at the emporium by Chairman of the Central Committee Deputy
Minister for  Mines U Hlaing Win, Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee
Deputy Minister U Myint Thein, Secretary  of the Central Committee Managing
Director Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo and officials.

 He attended the sale of jade lots by tender.

 Today, gem merchants purchased altogether 188 jade lots valued at US $
850,196.

 Jewellery and jade figurines sold at fixed prices fetched US $ 46,801.

 Jade lots will also be sold by tender on 24 and 25 October at the emporium
which 411 local and  foreign gem merchants are attending.

YANGON, 23 Oct Managing Director Mr Boon Yoon Chiang of Jardine Matheson
 South-East Asia Pte Ltd of Singapore and party called on Member of the State
Law and Order  Restoration Council Minister for Hotels and Tourism Lt -Gen
Kyaw Ba at his office
 at 2 pm today.

 Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism,
Managing Director  U soe thein of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and
other officials were also present.

(9)   MIC Chairman receives MD of Fritz Werner Co
 
YANGON, 23 OCt Member of the State Law and Order Restoration Council Deputy
Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral
Maung Maung Khin received Managing Director of Fritz Werner Co Mr Werner
Schoeltzke and party at his office at 3 pm today.

Present also were officials of the Government Office and Myanmar Investment
Commission.

(10) LSG to launch aircraft catering services in Yangon
 
YANGON, 23 Oct LSG Lufthansa Services Enterprises Ltd, a Hong Kong-based
firm, and Department of Civil Aviation have agreed this morning to set up a
factory to launch aircraft catering services on board international airlines.

 Secretary-1 of the State Law and Order Restoration Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt
attended the signing ceremony of MoU between the two at the International
Business Centre to set up the factory under BOT system near Yangon
International Airport.

Under the contract, LSG, which is catering food to 75 international airlines
for aircraft catering services, will build the factory within one year, said
Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Thein Win.

 The factory will produce 2,500 food packets daily in accord with the
international standard ISO 9000, he added.Eighteen international airlines are
operating regular runs and chartered flights to YIA, which is handling more
and more passengers and freight yearly due to development of the nation's
economy and tourism industry, he said.

 LSG- will invest three million dollars to operate aircraft catering services
for ten years in Myanmar before transferring the business and the factory to
DCA. DCA is building Hanthawady International Airport and Mandalay
International Airport and has plans to upgrade airports at Bagan-NyaungU,
Heho and Thandwe to become world class facilities by the year 2000, said the
minister.

Managing Director of LSG Mr Dieter Hemmer also spoke.

 Mr Hemmer and Director-General of DCA U Tin Aye signed the contract.

 Lt-Gen Thein Win presented the MIC permit to Mr HemmeL

Sann Wai, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Tin Aye, Ambassador
of Germany to Myanmar Dr Wolfgang Wiesner, heads of departments, member of
the Board of Directors of LSG and guests were also present.
