Burmese opposition party member dies in
jail
11:22 a.m. Oct 23, 1997 Eastern
RANGOON, Oct 23 (Reuters) - A member of
Aung
San Suu Kyi's National League for
Democracy
(NLD) party has died in custody, Burma's
military
government said on Thursday.
Kyaw Din, 58, died at a prison hospital
of acute
pulmonary edema while serving a two-year
jail
sentence, the government said in a
statement received
by Reuters.
``U Kyaw Din of NLD Wakema Township, who
is
serving a two year prison sentence since
July 24,
1997 for violation of Burma Criminal Act
section
505 (B)...passed away on 20 October at
Wakema
Township hospital,'' the statement said.
It said he was also suffering from renal
failure and
``malignant hypertension.''
The statement gave no further details on
Kyaw Din's
sentence.
Officials from the NLD, the party
co-founded and run
by Suu Kyi, were not available for
comment.
A total of six well-known NLD members
have died in
custody since 1988, NLD statistics show.
Thousands of NLD members were killed or
imprisoned during and after nationwide
uprisings in
Burma in 1988.
The NLD won a landslide victory in a 1990
election
but the result was never recognised by
the military
government.
