AI accuses Burma's junta of cynical

AMNESTY ACCUSES BURMA'S JUNTA OF CYNICAL CONTEMPT OVER HUMAN RIGHTS
	*******************************************************************

The human rights group, Amnesty International says Burma's
ruling junta has
shown "cynical contempt" over calls to improve its human rights
record.

The London based group said in a report that Burma still holds
at least 12-hundred
          political prisoners.

It said the ruling State Law and Order Restoration Council
continued to arrest
political opponents and conduct mass relocations of ethnic
minorities.

Amnesty urged the international community to step up pressure
on the junta, and
for the U-N General Assembly to adopt a resolution calling for
the immediate
          release all prisoners of conscience.

The report said there'd been NO improvement in human rights
since Rangoon's
entry into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in July.
