(1)		Foundation Laid for YKK Golden Hill Towers on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road
 
		The YKK Golden Hill Towers is to be constructed under an agreement signed
between the Myanmar Port Authority of the Ministry of Transport and YKK
Development (Singapore) Pte Ltd. Mitsui Construction of Japan will construct
the tower's 20-storey two main buildings including the basement on 2.3 acres.
The two buildings will include 51 single rooms, 102 double rooms, 53 triple
rooms and six suits totalling 212 rooms. A tennis court, swimming pool,
recreation centre, restaurant, shopping arcade, commercial complex,
conference hall and gem will be constructed in the space between the two main
buildings. The project is scheduled to complete by the year 2000.
 
(2)		Work Under Way to Expand Paddy Sown Acreage
 
		In accordance with the presentation by those in charge of working groups,
irrigation canals were repaired, dredged, their embankments strengthened,
sluice gates repaired and dykes built in time for the 1997-98 monsoon paddy
in Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Sagaing, Yangon and Ayeyawady Division. Sown
acreage was then expanded. There was greater flow of water to the irrigated
area Repair of Sedawgyi Dam, Zawgyi Dam, Kinda Multipurpose Dam and 59 small
reservoirs in Mandalay Division resulted in the increase of 59,000 additional
irrigated acres.
 
		In Mandalay Division, repair of diversion weirs and 10 small reservoirs
contributed to an increase of 15,006 acres. Dams and Taungnyo Rerservoir in
bago Division expanded 52,855 more acres. In Sagaing Division, repair of YeU
and Shwebo Canals led to an increase of 10,198 acres. Similarly, there were
2,674 and 40,444 more acres in Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions. The total
increase thus stands at 180,177 acres. 
 
		Similarly, the Pests Control Division held educative talks with
agricultural personnel of the Division, Districts, Townships and villages and
conducted field tours in advance. This resulted in the decrease in the
outbreak of pests. The division charged with land utilization conducted field
tours and selected crops conducive to geographical and soil conditions of
Myanmar. In so doing, it selected the type of soil for short-term and
long-term programmes.
 
		The seed division also keeps records on distribution of seeds to individual
farmers, establishes model villages which receive quality seeds and develops
quality seeds. With the objective of putting 12 million acres under monsoon
paddy and four million under summer paddy totalling 16 million acres to
produce targeted 1,000 million baskets of paddy, the Ministry of Agriculture
and Irrigation had already cultivated paddy on 12.10 acres at the close of
monsoon on 30 September. 
 
		In Bago, Ayeyawady and Yangon Divisions and Mon State, 1.2 million acres of
paddy were affected during the last week of July due to heavy rains. A total
of 600,000 acres was destroyed of which paddy was cultivated on 400,000
acres. Beans and pulses, oil crops and summer paddy will be cultivated on the
remaining 200,000 acres. Beans and pulses were cultivated on 1.62 million
acres during the monsoon against the target of 1.57 million.
 
		Sugarcane was grown on 240,000 acres against the target of 220,000 acres.
Sugar mills have crushed over 900,000 tons of sugarcane and it is targeted to
produce 68,500 tons of sugar. Cotton was grown on 700,000 acres and efforts
are being made to produce 1,063 million viss. The crop was already grown on
636,000 acres. 
 
(3)		Workshop for Ministerial Level Asia and Pacific Region Social 	
Development Seminar in Manila Begins
 
		A workshop for the Ministerial Level Asia and Pacific Region Social
Development Seminar commenced at the International Business Centre at 9 am
today with an address by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement
Maj-Gen Soe Myint. Minister said the ministerial level regional seminar is
scheduled to be held in Manila, the Philippines, from 5 to 11 November.
 
		He said the present workshop would discuss social development programmes
and the aim of organizing the workshop was to review the work done for social
development, discussing social development programmes for the Asia and
Pacific region and contributing towards preparations for the forthcoming
seminar in Manila. He called on those present to realize the aims of the
workshop. UNDP Resident Representative and ESCAP Adviser then spoke. When the
workshop commenced, officials of the respective departments presented papers.

 
(4)		Minister for NPED to Attend ASEAN Economic Ministers 	Meeting
 
		Myanmar delegation led by Minister for National Planning and Economic
Development Brig-Gen Abel left Yangon by air for Malaysia on 14 October to
attend the 19th ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting there from 15 to 18 October.

discussed cooperation with cooperatives societies in production work.
