(1) UNICEF's 1997 Greeting Card Operation (GCO) Campaign Launched
 
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Women's
Association (UNWA) jointly launched the 1997 Greeting Card Operation (GCO)
Campaign at a ceremony held on 8 October at the Strand Hotel in Yangon. The
launching Ceremony opened with the video presentation entitled "Children:
Gems of Myanmar" after which the UNICEF Representative in Myanmar Dr Juan
Aguilar, and the President of UNWA Mrs Zuzana Das delivered welcoming remarks
in which they explained that every year UNICEF launches the fund-raising GCO
campaign on a global scale, and that the net proceeds of the GCO sales are
used to finance projects for the welfare and development of world's children.
The net proceeds of the GCO sales in Myanmar will be used in funding projects
for Myanmar children.
 
Entertainment programmes were next presented by the school children of the
International School in Yangon and by Myanmar school children under the
Department of Social Welfare. Regular sale of the 1997 GCO cards and gift
items will commence on 15 October 1997 at UNICEF office and at UNDP office.
The launching ceremony was attended by members of the diplomatic corps in
Yangon, Government counterparts, Representatives of NGOs in Yangon and United
Nations personnel.
 
(2) Agreement for Opening Duty Free Shops in Myanmar Signed
 
MITIC Holdings Ltd (Hong Kong), MITIC Ltd (Myanmar) and Soe Thwin Tun Co Ltd
on 8 October held a signing ceremony at the Summit Parkview Hotel for opening
Duty Free Shops at the Yangon International Airport, Port, City Centre in
Yangon and in border towns.
 
(3) Minister Addresses MRCS Executive Committee Meeting
 
Minister for Health attended the Myanmar Red Cross Society Executive
Committee meeting at the MRCS Headquarters on Strand Road on 8 October.
Addressing the meeting, the minister discussed the need to build up MRCS to
become a world class national organization based on discipline, to serve
national duty concerned with humanitarian assistance, to consolidate itself
right from the grassroots level, to work in cooperation with other
humanitarian organizations, to lay down projects for its expansion. Minister
then called for active organizational work starting from the grassroots level
to the central level. President of MRCS and Executive Committee members then
joined in the discussions. The Minister fulfilled the requirements.
 
(4) Television and Broadcasting Delegation Leaves for PRC
 
Television and broadcasting delegation led by Director (Admin) 
U Khing Maung Htay of Myanma Television and Radio Department left Yangon on 7
October for Shanghai, at the invitation of the Ministry of Broadcasting,
Motion Picture and Television of the People's Republic of China under the
cooperation arrangements between the two countries.
 
(5) Seizure of Heroin Blocks in Tamu
 
A combined group including members of Defence Services Intelligence, Tamu
anti-drug squad, Myanmar Police Force and members of Zedan Ward Law and Order
Restoration Council, acting on tip off, searched Chita soft drinks shop in
Zedan Ward 7 in Tamu on 27 September. They seized five heroin blocks weighing
1.795 kilos, 38 red stones, 52 green stones and cash. Legal action is being
taken against the suspects according to law.
 
OFFICE CALLS IN YANGON ON 8 OCTOBER
 
(A) Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Lt-Gen Myint Aung received Dr
Prem Nath, Resident Representative of Food and Agriculture Organization,
accompanied by Water Resources Development and Management expert of FAO Mr J
Martinez Beltran at his office.
 
(B) Minister for Commerce Lt-Gen Tun Kyi received a group led by President
Director Mr Hashim S Djojohadijusumo of PT Tirtamas Comexindo Co of Indonesia
at the ministry.
 
(C) Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Thein Win received President Mr Premchal
Karnasuta of Italian-Thai Development Public Limited Company and party at his
office.
 
(D) Minister for Energy U Khin Maung Thein received Chairman Mr Masayoshi
Baba of Furukawa Rock Drill Co Ltd of Japan at his office.
 
(E) Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thaung received a group led
by President Director Mr Hashim S Djojohadijusumo of PT Tirtamas Comexindo Co
of Indonesia at his office.
 
(F) Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen 
Maung Maung received a 17-member delegation of Ageo Chamber of Commerce and
Industry led by Mr Kenichi Sakuraba (Nissan Diesel Co Ltd) at the commission
office.
 
(G) Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung received
Managing Director of Itochu Corporation Mr K Saegusa and party of Japan at
the commission office.
