Rangoon: In the biggest meeting of the democratic opposition in years,
Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi?s party renewed an appeal yesterday for
dialogue with the military regime, but reserved the right to name its
own delegation.

The National League for Democracy is wary that an apparent recent
softening by the Government may be aimed at splitting and weakening the
party, and Ms Suu Kyi urged supporters when they met yesterday to strive
for unity.

The NLD central executive committee submitted a report to the 700
supporters gathered at Ms Suu Kyi?s lakeside home yesterday denouncing
repression by the ruling State Law and Order Restoration Council and
repeating calls for negotiations to restore democracy.

?Current ills can be cured only by face-to-face dialogue between the
SLORC and the NLF, which has the right to nominate its own
representatives,? the report said.

After more than a year of severely curtailing Ms Suu Kyi?s political
activities, the Government allowed party officials to meet at her
lakeside home over the weekend in a congress marking the ninth
anniversary of the NLD?s founding.

Dozens of people were turned away after the number allowed in approached
750. (Associated Press)
