THAILAND REPORTED TO BE DEPORTING BURMESE MINISTERS-IN-EXILE
************************************************************
Tuesday 16 September, 1997 (6:06pm AEST)
Thailand is likely to deport three ministers of Burma's
government-in-exile, despite fears they will be jailed by the
military government on their return.
The three ministers of the coalition government-in-exile, all
elected MPs from Aung San Suu Kyi's Burmese Democratic
Party, were arrested at their offices in Bangkok.
Agence France-Presse quotes Thai immigration officials as
saying eight Burmese were arrested as they did not have
passports and were being held at a Bangkok detention centre.
It's NOT known when the detainees would be deported to
Burma.
The government-in-exile was formed by MPs elected in
Burma's 1990 elections -- which were won overwhelmingly
by Aung San Suu Kyi's party, a victory which was
disregarded by the military.
