Australian Envoy mets Burma's most
AUSTRALIAN ENVOY MEETS BURMA'S MOST SENIOR MILITARY OFFICIAL
************************************************************
Wednesday 17 September, 1997 (5:53am AEST)
Australia's special envoy to Burma, John Dauth, has met the
country's most senior military official on his visit to Rangoon,
and raised human rights concerns.
South East Asia correspondent Ginny Stein, reports Foreign
Minister Alexander Downer has been briefed on the
discussions:
A spokesman for Mr Downer says Mr Dauth raised
Australia's human rights concerns directly with Khin Nyunt,
at a time when other countries are refusing to have contact
with the SLORC, but urging the military rulers to open
dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for
Democracy. Australia's decision to meet with the SLORC
represented a change of tack. Mr Downer's office says it's
too early to say what will come of the contact. Meanwhile,
the SLORC yesterday claimed senior LD officials had
snubbed a rare meeting with Khin Nyunt, unhappy that
party leader, Aung San Suu Kyi had not been invited.
