(1)		Myanmar Police Force Urged to Become Second Most Disciplined 			
      and Powerful National Defence Force

		The Committee for Reformation of Myanmar Police Force Management System
held a meeting on 29 August at the Ministry of Home Affairs. The committee
was formed in 1994 for all-round progress of MPF and to reform it. Duties
have been assigned to five subcommittees which were formed under this
committee. The committee is making efforts for MPF to become a reliable force
for the public, assessing and reforming existing rules and regulations of
MPF. Changes have been made in the force to wipe out corruption, abuse of
rights and misconduct of police which were the evil legacy of colonialists.
New MPF rules and regulations have been enacted and the existing ones have
been amended and endorsed to be in line with the State?s political, economic
and social objectives. Overall review of the police functions at present
indicated progress in maintenance of law and order, drug eradication, drug
abuse control, crime prevention, exposing of crimes, taking action against
criminals and public security activities. The new system has reduced crime to
a considerable degree, exposing 90 per cent of all major crimes and 80 per
cent of other crimes.

(2)		Narcotic Drugs Seized

		On 27 August in Mandalay (Maha Aung Myay Township) 4.304 Kg of Heroin was
seized by the members of Defence Services Intelligence and Mandalay Police
from (4) suspects who had brought it into Mandalay concealed inside (195)
Soap Dishes on a motor vehicle. Further investigation let to the arrest of
ring members who are connected to the case, it is learnt.

(3)		Chief Justice Returns From Manila

		Chief Justice U Aung Toe and party arrived back Yangon by air on 29 August
 from the Philippines after attending the Seventh Meeting of Chief Justices
in Asia and the Pacific Region and Meeting of Chief Justices sponsored by
Asian Development Bank held in Manila.

(4)		MMA to Hold 44th Conference 

		Myanmar Medical Association will hold its 44th conference from 15 to 19
January 1988 at the association headquarters on Theinbyu Street in Mingala
Taungnyunt Township. Physicians wishing to present papers to the conference
are to send their abstract of papers to the Secretary, Education Affairs
Committee, MMA, not later than 30 November this year, it is learnt.

(5)		Minister Inspects Hovercraft Transport

		Director Mr. Declan Elliot of Norasia Hovercraft Ltd of Switzerland ,
Managing Director U Aung Khing of Flying tiger engineering Co. and officials
briefed the Minister for Commerce on Superkings 001 Hovercraft. The minister
and party took a test cruise of the hovercraft in Yangon River. The
hovercraft, first ever introduced here, can carry 21 to 25 passengers. It is
capable of travelling at 45 miles per hour and will take three hours and 30
minutes between Bagan and Mandalay. With the sponsorship of the Ministry of
commerce, Norasia Hovercraft and Flying Tiger Engineering will operate the
hovercraft service soon.

(6)		Myanmar Delegation to Attend 18th ASEAN Parliament Work 	
	      Committee and General Assembly

		Myanmar delegation led by Chairman of National Convention Convening Work
Committee U Aung Toe left Yangon by air on 30 August morning  for Indonesia
to attend 18th ASEAN Parliament Work Committee and General Assembly to be
held from 1 to 6 September in Bali.

(7)		Myanmar Delegation Returns From Thailand

		The 30-member Myanmar delegation led by Commander of South-East Command
Maj. Gen. Ket Sein arrived back Yangon by special Tatmadaw flight on 30
August from Thailand after attending the 15th Meeting of the Myanmar-Thailand
Regional Border Committee held in Chiangrai. While in Thailand, the Myanmar
delegation discussed Myanmar-Thailand regional border matters with the  Thai
delegation. The delegation also paid courtesy calls on the Supreme Commander
of the Royal Thai Armed Forces and the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai
Army.

(8)		Officials of MEOMA Observe Thilawa Port

		Yangon Division industrial development in-charge Minister for Transport Lt.
Gen. Thein Win, accompanied by Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Edible Oil Merchants
Association arrived at Thilawa Port in Kyauktan Township on 30 August. The
minister explained the project to officials of MEOMA at the office of C&P
(Myanmar) Pte Ltd. He said edible oil merchants are invited to invest in
Thilawa Port in accord with the policy of giving priority to Myanmar national
businessman in economic sector and decision at the meeting of Industrial
Development Committee held on 22 August. Though 17 wharves were planned  to
be built in 25 years, they will be completed in four years in the time of the
State Law and Order Restoration Council, he said. Work under implementation
will be completed in December, he added. He said arrangements are being made
for ensuring smooth handling of export and import goods in 20 years to come. 

A total of 38 blocks will be implemented in 4,000 kilometres to the south.
Each block will be 200x750 km with the area of about 37 acres. West of the
port there will be Thilawa Industrial Zone. Those wishing to invest in the
zone may contact Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development, he
said. The minister said necessary assistance will be provided fully. Freight
handling will be undertaken at the wharf and port services will also be done.
Wharves, roads and buildings have emerged in the places of bushes and muddy
ground. The minister and party observed container wharves being constructed
by C&P (Myanmar) Pte Ltd and wharf and edible oil tanks under construction by
Asia Pacific.

(9)		Organon Seminar on Birth Spacing Methods

		The first seminar on modern birth spacing methods in Myanmar, organized by
Organon of the Netherlands, was held at the Traders Hotel on 30th August. The
first presentation titled ?Contraceptive Choices for the Nursing Mother?, it
highlighted the results of studies done with Exulton, a tablet presentation
and Megestron, an injectable for three months birth spacing protection. The
second presentation titled ? personal experience with Multiload 375, an IUCD?
was presented and exchange of views on the modern ICUD, multiload 375. The
third presentation ?Overview of Modern Oral Contraceptive pills, results of
clinical trials on Marvelon, the Malaysian and Asian Experience? was
presented. Then followed a panel discussion in which the three speakers and
the audience 
exchanged interesting views and questions on modern, contraceptive methods to
be used in Myanmar.

OFFICE CALLS IN YANGON ON 29&30 AUGUST

(A)		Secretary-1 of the State Law and Order  Restoration Council Lt. Gen.
Khin Nyunt received Japanese Culture delegation led by President of the
Institute of Asian Ethno-Forms Professor Kaneko Kazushige at Dagon Yeiktha of
the Ministry of Defence on 29 August.

(B)		Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin
received Chairman of SGV & Co. Mr. Carlos R. Alindada and party at his office
on 29 August.

(C)		Minister for Hotels and Tourism Lt. Gen. Kyaw Ba received Managing
Director of Leonard International Pte Ltd Mr. Gerard Goon at his office on 29
August.

(D)		Minister for Commerce Lt. Gen. Tun Kyi received Deputy Chief Executive
Officer Mr. David SS Chin of Singapore Trade Development Board and party at
his office on 29 August.

(E)		Minister for Transport Lt. Gen. Thein Win received Group Managing
Director of C&P Holding Pte Ltd Mr. Loi Kai Meng at his office on 29 August.
Similarly, Managing Director of China Harbour Engineering Company 
Mr. Cui Qi and party called on Minister Lt. Gen Thein Win at his office on
the same day.

(F)		Minister for Energy U Khin Maung Thein received Head of Operation of
Total Exploration and production Mr. J. Ropers at his office on 29 August.

(G)		Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig. Gen. Abel
received Japanese delegation led by member of the Parliament Mr. Yoichi Tani
at his office on 29 August.

(H)		Minister for Transport Lt. Gen Thein Win received Managing Director Mr.
Oh Jin Young of Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co Ltd of ROK and party
at his office on 30 August.
