NLD AWAITS DIALOGUE (25.8.97-THE NA (r)

Subject: Re: NLD AWAITS DIALOGUE (25.8.97-THE NATION)

I would like to correct some points that were wrongfully appeared in The
Nation?s article on August 25th, of which it wrote was Burmese army did not
support Daw Aung San Suu Kyi so that she was impossible to rule Burma.

First, the army supported Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and NLD. In 1990 national
election, her party won 82% of the parliamentary seats. Strong military
bases: Mingala Don County, Bham County, Wander Mier Villa, Htut Kyant County
in the Rangoon Division as well as Foun Gyi and May Myo cities, voted for
NLD. Ta Sa Nya party backed by some power elite were lost its voters in the
consequences. The election's results clearly showed that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
and NLD were supported by the solders.

Second, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and NLD had never had a chance to take the
offices in Burma so that it was inappropriate to judge whether Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi was not supported by the army. The Burmese army?s founding father was
U Aung San, father of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and all old and young solders
love Gen. Aung San. So does Suu Kyi.

Third, the solders are tired off fighting for civil wars, lacking education
opportunities, cutting off family reunions, granting insufficient pension
funds and equal housing opportunities, blocking off joining in social and
political organizations. If NLD were giving all above rights to the solders,
they would support her and her NLD. Therefore, the army would become
international standard one that will properly defense people?s life,
property, and national security. The present army under the SLORC is only to
protect the generals? power and wealth. Again, it is very inappropriate to
prejudge whether solders are not supporting Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her
party, NLD.

Thank You.
