ROHINGYA REFUGEES WARN OF MASS INFLUX AFTER BURMESE PERSECUTION
	***************************************************************

	     Monday 4 August, 1997 (4:15am AEST)

A Burmese Muslim refugee group claims that as many as
14-thousand refugees could flee into Bangladesh unless their
          security could be guaranteed.

The Rohingya Solidarity Organisation says many had already
crossed the border into Bangladesh since June because of
          persecution from the Burmese military.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees put the
number of Burmese Muslims, or Rohingyas, at seven
thousand, describing them as both "economic and political
          migrants."

The Rohingya Solidarity Organisation warned that refugees
would continue to flow into Bangladesh unless security of the
minority group was ensured in Burma's Arakan state which
          borders Bangladesh.
