     Thursday 24 July, 1997 (8:52pm AEST)

The general who chaired Burma's ruling junta when it was
set up in 1988 has died of a heart attack.

A government statement said General Saw Maung died at his
          home, aged 69.

The General chaired Burma's State Law and Order Council
from its inception, but retired in 1991 for health reasons.

The SLORC took power in Burma in September, 1988 after
          months of pro-democracy demonstrations.

General Saw Maung was a protege of former military
strongman, General Ne Win, who is still alive.
