	Highlights & Agendas of The 30TH AMM/PMC and 4th ARF of ASEAN 
	*************************************************************

Highlights of the 30th AMM
--------------------------

     1. The Ceremony for the admission of Laos and Myanmar into
     ASEAN will be held in the afternoon of 23 July 1997. This will be
     followed by flag raising ceremonies.

     2. The Opening Ceremony of the 30th AMM will follow the next day
     on 24 July 1997. Hon. DATO' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Prime
     Minister of Malaysia, will deliver the inaugural address.

     3. The Joint Communique of the 30th AMM will be adopted on 25 July
     1997.

Agenda of the 30th AMM
----------------------

     4. Among the items for discussions would be consideration of the
     Annual Report of the ASEAN Standing Committee, 1996-1997.

     5. The AMM will also discuss the establishment of the ASEAN
     Foundation, granting of ASEAN Citation, and the proposed convening
     of an ASEAN Roundtable on Legal, Technical and Economic Issues of
     Multimedia Technology and follow-up actions for the
     ASEAN-Mekong Basin Development Cooperation.

     6. The AMM is also expected to discuss preparations for the
     ASEAN's 30th Anniversary Commemorative Summit to be held in
     Kuala Lumpur in December 1997.

     7. The AMM is expected to select the Secretary-General of ASEAN
     for the next five years.

Highlights of the 4th ARF
-------------------------

     8. The 4th ARF will begin with an Informal Working Dinner to be
     hosted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia on 26 July 1997.

     9. Closed session of the 4th ARF will take place on 27 July 1997.

     10. The ARF Chairman's Statement on the 4th ARF will be issued on
     27 July 1997.

Agenda of the ARF
-----------------

     11. As in the case of the previous ARF, the Ministers will exchange
     views on the general political and security situation in the 
     Asia-Pacific
     region.

     12. The ARF will consider the Report of the Chairman of the
     ARF-SOM which held its Meeting and a Retreat on 19-20 May 1997
     in Langkawi. The Report will contain recommendations in the fields of
     confidence building, disaster relief coordination, search and 
rescue, and
     peacekeeping operations.

Highlights of the ASEAN-PMC
---------------------------

     13. The Post-Ministerial Conference will commence with an Opening
     Remarks by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia. This will be
     followed by a closed session on 28-29 July 1997.

     14. PMC Press Conference is scheduled in the morning of 29 July
     1997. 

Agenda of the ASEAN PMC
-----------------------

     15. The PMC is expected to take up international political and
     economic issues. Political issues include the developments in the 
     Middle
     East and in Europe, including Bosnia Herzegovina and NATO
     enlargement. Economic issues cover developments in APEC, WTO
     and G7. Other transnational issues like illicit drugs, environment and
     terrorism will also be taken up.
