ANTI-DRUGS TEAM FROM CHINA IN RANGOON FOR COOPERATION TALKS
***********************************************************
Sunday 13 July, 1997 (10:59pm AEST)
A six-member team of officials from China is in Rangoon for
talks with their Burmese counterparts on the control of illegal
drugs.
Burma's official media said the visiting delegation was being
led China's vice-minister of public security, Bai Jingfu.
The one-week visit comes shortly after Burma and China,
together with four other regional countries, met in Bangkok
under the auspices of the United Nations to discuss
cooperation on drugs control.
Much of the world's opium and heroin is produced in Burma
and increasingly trafficked out of the country via southern
China.
