Formation of OBSDA

Overseas Burmese Social Development Association (OBSDA)

In Burma, where military totalitarianism has been practiced for years, along
with struggle for democracy, for the emergence of righteous, genuine and
developed democratic society, laying foundations must be done.
We, who have been struggling for democracy in our mother land, formed the
Overseas Burmese Social Development Association (OBSDA) on the basic of
patrotism.

Brief background history
Popular nationwide pro-democracy uprising has took place in Burma in 8
August, 1988(8888). On 18 September in the same year, the State Law and
Order Restoration Council (SLORC) seized the state power in military coup
after brutal cracking down the uprising.  Thousands of people sacrificed
their lives for democracy in that uprising. Of those who took part in the
uprising, students and youths played important role and continued the
struggle for democracy as well as along the border until this day.  

1. Aims
To mutually carry out the development of social and educational affairs of
the patriotic overseas Burmese people for the restoration and development of
the country in future.

2.  Working Plans
(a) To promote and widen the real practice of democratization among the
members and citizens.
(b) To stand up anti-narcotics within democratic society.
(c) To find out ways and means for the loss of human rights and sufferings
of people in Burma for the awareness of international community.
(d) To improve the mutual progress of the organization and its members.
(e) To get contact with international organizations.

3.  Membership
(a) The members shall be persons who have common desire to implement the
aims for both self interest and welfare of others.
(b) Admission to the organization (membership) must be decided by the
secretariat.
(c) Following address can be contacted for membership.

4.  Formation
Formation of the organization was done by the activists on 1st January 1997
to fulfill the above-mentioned aims and working plans.
For the good start of the organization secretariat will take responsibility
for the time being.
Secretariat was democratically elected at the meeting held on 26 April 1997
by all members and works of the organization will be done onwards.
